One of my friends plays the keyboard and writes most of the music for his band, and I want to give him something which'll help him with it. I can only think of blank sheet music pages and maybe some blank CDs on which to record the songs, but those seem trite and a wee bit boring. Is there anything else that I can give him, maybe a bit more special or personal?

It would help if I knew your budget and also a little more about exactly how he writes. Many musicians nowadays use computers to write, and some of my fellow students from the old music department have their keyboards plugged directly into the computer where they use programs like Sibelius, Finale (I don't like that one, myself), Acid, Cakewalk to handle all the recording and music-writing. It's been almost 30 years since I touched music manuscript paper, myself, and my memories of scribbling eighth-notes for my orchestration final are not fond :-)

So if you have a big budget and you are familiar with the computer set-up, you could consider purchasing new or upgraded software.

More affordable: as a performer, I found I always appreciated the gift of an instrument cable. Those things wear out and I always carried extra. A 20-foot "monster" brand cable is a generous length and top quality.

Musicians will also appreciate deeply any new stuff by or about their favorite bands or musicians--uploaded cds of rare material, biographies and tribute books, etc.

Most music stores sell gift certificates, if you're stuck on everything else.

just a reminder to keep away from the "bad gifts" like treble clefs tie clips and cufflinks and pins, or socks and ties with notes on them, ok?
A gig bag, not unlike a messenger bag, is a useful thing to tote note paper, pencils, and the occasional music stand around in.
A clip-on lamp for music stands in dark corners ( don't forget the extension cord) is less personal but comes in handy.
If he cares for his hands, a good lotion and a nail kit???!!!??
Happy hunting

hi, maybe you could get your friend a really nice book to do with music, some nice manuscript paper or even a gift voucher for a music shop...

Why not go to a music store and see if they have any suggestions?
