No one gets to heaven on their own account, on through Jesus Christ. That is the very reason God sent Jesus to die on a cross, because only the righteous may enter heaven, and we are all sinners, The world needed a way to get to heaven, so God sent His Son to pay the full price for the sins of the world, so that anyone who believes in Him, would not die and go to hell, but could have everlasting life in heaven
When you compare a human being to God Himself, only God is Good, and Perfectly Holy and fully Righteous. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself, paid the punishment for all sins, so that through Him we may have a way to be justisfied, and made righteous in the eyes of God. The ones who don't believe, are condemned already, because they reject the very Son of God. You can't reject God's Son, and then expect God to welcome you into heaven.
The only way to God, is through Jesus Christ, that is scripture. So yes, your sister and brother-in-law were right in telling you this, until & unless you accept and 'believe' Jesus", God's heart will be hardened against you, and He is deaf to your prayers. That's the gospel truth. God has said, if you don't believe men whom you can see, when they speak my word to you, how will you believe Me, whom ye can't see".
It's like this, if you break the law and kill someone, and are sent before the Judge, you can't just walk up to the Judge and tell him your sorry and he'll let it go, you need a good lawyer to defend you to the Judge. Well, it's the same with God. God is the Almighty Judge, without Christ as your Lawyer, to justisfy you and wipe the slate clean, present you innocent, and righteous before the Judgement Seat of God, you are guilty and will be punished for your sins. The blood that Jesus shed for your sins, paid the full punishment, and washes you clean, Jesus said, the righteousness of a man is but filthy rags to God. But through Him, you are made clean, and that He will present you to God, without spot or wrinkle. Mans' sins are like crimson to God, but through Christ, they are white as snow. "Sins are forgiven as far as the east is from the west, and washed away in a sea of forgetfulness."
How to guarantee you will go to heaven:
Admit to Jesus that you are a sinner & ask Him to forgive you
Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God,that He gave His life on a cross for your sins, and He rose from the grave three days later, and sits at the right hand of God in heaven. That He has a special place in heaven reserved just for you. Trust God that He is who He says He is, and He can do what He says He can do, and will do all that He has promises He'll do.
Ask Him to come into your heart, and make it clean, to help you do the things He wants you to do and be all He wants you to be, be honest with Him and tell Him you want to go to heaven.
Just say a simple prayer, like, Dear Jesus, I'm so sorry. I've read your word and I know I'm a sinner please forgive me for all my sins, from now on I will follow you, and try do my best to do what say is right, with your help, please forgive me of all my sins and I ask you right now to come into my heart and make it clean. I want to go to heaven and I promise not to do those things anymore, but I need your help. I can't do it without you. Thankyou, In the Name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.
**The Lord knows your heart, just talk to Him. Then He will hear your prayers, if its out of a sincere heart, God will honor it.†

John 9:31 declares, “We know that God does not hear sinners, but those who worship Him and do His will, those He hears.” It has also been said that "the only prayer that God hears from a sinner is the prayer for salvation." As a result of this Scripture, some believe that God does not hear and/or will never answer the prayers of an unbeliever. In context, though, the Scripture is saying that God does not perform miracles through an unbeliever. The following Scriptures describe God hearing and answering the prayers of an unbeliever. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us that God answers prayers based on whether they are asked according to His will. This principle, perhaps, applies to unbelievers. If an unbeliever asks a prayer of God that is according to His will, nothing prevents God from answering such a prayer – according to His will.

God is no body's personal property. Each one of us is a child of God and He will listen to us all, whether we are good or bad. Just like you can save yourself from lot of trouble if you listen to your father if your actions are good you can enjoy life and bad actions will make you suffer. So what is important is to know the consequence of our action and using our discrimination do the right actions. Just imagine how foolish the Muslims are to think that if they kill the 'Kafer' they will go to heaven! Their God Allah is the most Merciful and Benevolent and the word Islam means Peace and how can then it be true that they can kill and go to Heaven.
But you should know that every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. And make use of the present do good actions and become a saint.
Heaven is not a place or a time it is being everywhere and every when. And you can attain it by developing detachment.

Everyone is a sinner....They are also sinners...so why should they be the only non-sinners in the world?? Nobody is perfect and pure enough to be sinless today...even the "good guys". I guess its a matter of "repenting your sins" ,being sorry and trying not to do it again... ie at the end of confession you have to say...Oh my God, I am very sorry that I have sinned agianst you and because you are so good and with your help I will try not to sin again..... so even catholics who get rid of sin when you go there know that you will probalby be back for more!!

All prayers are heard and answered. If you do not understand or hear the answer, that is a problem you have to work on alone. All of us are sinners and no one can point out another person's transgressions unless they really want to put their own out in the spotlight to be scrutinized. Therefore I would tell your sister and brother -in -law that while they mean well, they should tend to their own garden before they come try to weed and prune yours. You just continue to pray and ask God to forgive your sins and trying to correct that which you know is wrong. That is all you can do and all God ask's of you. He never said he expects you to be perfect, just that you trust in him to clean you of sin when you bring it to his feet.

Pentecostals have some views that I do not agree with. Salvation does not remove our sin nature, it just removes the penalty of that sin nature, which is eternal death in hell. We are still sinner and subject to temptation. God hears all prayers; it if He not, then no one could be saved because it is a sinner praying and crying out to God that allows God to save a person through the blood of Jesus. Those of us that are saved are sinners saved by grace. We can still sin and we do, but God is just to forgive us. Find a non-denominational pastor that is well-versed in salvation and the gospel of Jesus Christ and he will be able to answer all of your questions and concerns. The gospel of Jesus Christ and the salvation message is my specialty and that is all I preach on---every Biblical message that I give is through the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you have trouble finding a qualified non-denominational pastor, then seek out a conservative Baptist pastor----the Baptist have salvation down pat.

If your first prayer is God forgive me a sinner, and mean it from the bottom of your heart, God will hear you and will be faithful to forgive. Then in your faithful walk in Christ as you mature God will be more attentive to your prayers.
James 5: 14Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

The Bible said knock and someone will open the door, ask and your question will be answer. If they are true believers they should know that the lord never turns his back on anyone!
