We have swim class today but half my toenail is gone. I'm afraid that it might be infected or it'll hurt or something. Should I go in or should I sit out?

OUCH!!! Let the teacher decide. The clorine water will heal it faster, but it may be against the pool rules.

Same thing happened to me. I just applied an antiseptic and went back to swimming. Pretty sure that the pool that you're gonna get into is filtered and treated so the threat of infection maybe minimal. May I suggest using a water proof band-aid, just to have at least a minimal cover on your half exposed nailbed. Just check occasionally. If it got swollen, better have it checked.

You should put some peroxide on it, and some antibiotic ointment on it. Tape it up and go swim. Be sure to rinse it after swimming, and repeat the ointment until it heals.

Put on a liquid band-aid. I think they are waterproof too. If you feel overly conscious about how it looks, then cover it up with a regular band-aid after you put the liquid band-aid on.

decision is yours,
if you like you go...
if it needs additional care you can protect your toe with some grease (if water irritates)
