My cat Jasper was in a car accident 5 days ago. He had a head injury & broken jaw. His jaw has been wired & he has no brain damage. However he also broke his pelvis in 5 places. The Vet has not performed surgery as the fractures are well aligned & should heal with rest & time. The real 'downer' on all this good news, is that the Vet fears some of his pelvic nerves may be damaged, either severed or just compressed with tissue swelling. He now has bladder/urinary retention with overflow incontinence. He cannot come home until his bladder works (time can heal the nerves) and if after 2-3 weeks he still has this problem- they have suggested that he is put to sleep as the condition is not compatible with quality of life.He is such a brave chap to come through so much trauma & survive and I don't want to give up on him. I am really hoping that there is someone out there who has had a cat with a similar problem that recovered. Just need a bit of hope to cling onto Folks!

I'm so sorry to hear about Jasper. At least you won't let him outdoors, anymore (inside good-outside bad). So glad to hear you're on his side and want to do what's best.

I agree with the one who posted before me, cats have a way of bouncing back. Sounds like Jasper has the spirit. Please give him a chance. As far as considering any special future (needs), I don't have an answer, but I do suggest that you check out http://cats.about.com/. The writer there, Franny Syufy, is very informed about all cat-related topics. She may have more information that would be helpful.

I hope that Jasper heals quickly. Good luck and best wishes.

your gonna let the pelvis heal on its own.. wake up! I am a very blunt person so I am gonna say what I think rather than the cutesy other comments (from people with no veterinaryy qualifications) that I suspect will be uploaded as I am typing this. The vet is an unlikely cat serial killer who enjoys killing cats. He must be putting her to sleep because she is in immense pain and there is nothing that can be done.. I think if your unhappy, you were right to get a second opinion.. but after that you should let it go. I certainly wouldn't come here for answers though. I guess what it boils down to is, who's opinion would you rather have? A vet who studied for years at uni.. or internet people without any evidence for a qualification in this.. After your second opinion, I suggest you let it go.. I know it's sad.. but you have to accept.. Sorry..

I have not personally been through something so drastic with any of my pets.

However, animals have a fantastic way of bouncing back and having an optimistic aura about these things.

I hope that things work for you and your cat. I will keep Jasper in my heart and thoughts.
