A 9mm is probably your best bet. The rounds are realatively cheap and it is a good caliber for home defense as well. Taurus makes some nice models and they run between $300 and $500 new. Beretta also makes a very nice gun - model 92FS is preferred by many law enforcement agencies and is standard issue by the US military. They are close to $600 though.
If you only want something that is .22 caliber, Walther makes the P22 which is a nice gun. It runs between $250 and $350. .22 ammunition is the cheapest, but it is too small for self defense.
If you want to get into competitions, you'll need a .45 caliber. For competition shooting, the gun you have really makes a difference. If you can shell out the money, you can pick a nice Kimber 1911 up for around $1,000.

I have carried a gun for most of my adult life. My duty guns don't get carried much anymore, since I retired. I still carry a concealed weapon. Many of the handguns, rifles, and shotguns I now have are for recreational use. I do quite a bit of competition shooting.
Shooting at the range, just for the sake of shooting at the range, gets boring after a while. For a decent quality handgun, you will spend about $300 to $500. Ammunition and range expenses add up too.
So before you buy an expensive item and then lose interest in it, take a look at some of the different competition shooting you can get involved with.

Practical Action Shooting: Emphasis on fast, accurate shooting while moving through a series of obstacles. Some different organizations use different rules, but you can use a stock semi auto or revolver in most matches.

Cowboy Action Shooting: Shooting with "old west" design guns. Single action revolvers, lever action rifles, double barrel shotguns. Dress in old west or cowboy clothing. Great fun.

Bulls eye shooting ; Very disciplined shooting.

NRA Action Shooting: Another disciplined sport, but very challenging.

Lots to pick from. Have fun. Stay safe.

I've been to a few ranges that had sort of a rental thing going on. Call the ranges in your area and see if they have anything you could use. If nothing else, it will give you a feel for one and help you decide what model is right for you.

For just fooling around, my favorite used to be a Ruger 10/22 rifle. It's easy to handle, doesn't jam up, and the .22 rounds are cheap enough for target shooting. Handgun, I had a Colt double 9, which is a double action (just pull the trigger, you don't have to cock it and then pull) revolver that holds 9 .22 rounds. They look like old west 6 guns, fun to play with. But nothing, and I mean nothing, is as much fun as a 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Run #7 birdshot through it, cheap, and will blow a freakin hole in the target. Wheee!

I believe that every God fearing, red blooded American should own at least one firearm. Be it for recreational purposes. Or for protection. It is your Constitutional right. It's a great stress reliever. And one of the greatest hobbies a person could have.

Find a good shooting range that will give you instructions and let you rent and shoot guns they have there.

You will get some practical advice and have a much better idea about what kind of pistol you should buy.

Save the money. If you do buy one for target shooting the .22 calibers are very good. Economical ammo, accurate for a pistol and fairly quiet. BSA also makes a pretty good pellet pistol.

get a 357 and shoot 38's out of it. Get a revolver.

always---ALWAYS keep in mind that if you make a mistake with this firearm, you could frank up someone's life, and if you are any kind of human being, it will frank with your mind for the rest of your life. This is not a toy.

You should save your money. I can never understand why it's considered entertaining to pull a triger and put a hole in a piece of paper. I think its cheaper to buy a video game anyways.
