Who will be taking the dog out while you are at work? That is a really long stretch for a dog to "hold it"
I would say getting a adult dog, from a shelter, (not only because you are saving a life) BUT because altered adult dogs are for the most part more laid back. trust me, they were living in a cage, with little excersize, and few potty breaks. So, a shelter dog, may actually be perfect for you.
IF you have your heart set on a purebred, Maybe a adult cocker spaniel, or a shi tzu, or some ADULT small dog like that.
Hoped to help!

Great that you think ahead about this, but what is the dog going to do while you are at work for 10-12 hours. It will sleep. Then you come home and it will want to play..
I can't think of any dog that will just sit there for 24/7. Unless it was stuffed! Maybe wait awhile until you are in a better position.

I too agree with everyone else, but I'm going to try a more constructive approach. You sound more like a cat person! Cats are equally as effectionate if you get the right one, and they are extremely low maintenance and low key. Get a tom cat, they are usually the most mellow, and try to get an adult - kittens need as much love and attention as a baby. Older cats will be more content to just sleep or look out the window for hours at a time while you're at work =]
Good luck pet searching.

Honey, don't get a dog if you do not intend to walk it or give it exercise because making a dog a house sponge is not doing anything good for the dog. The poor baby will be shut up for hours with no way to go to the bathroom and it's going to be really lonely for the poor thing.
You should perhaps wait until you have more time to spend with a pet or get a cat who can stay indoors

The best type of dog for you is a cat. You can leave a bowl of food a dish of water and a litter box out and your all set. Get your pet from a shelter. Try giving an older cat a chance at life again. All of mine have been from shelters t least 2 years old and they were all very loving and affectionate.

If you are working 10-12 hours a day, I would say no dog is best for you. That dog needs attention and someone to let them out to do their business. Unless you have someone else that can take care of the dog, I would say no dog.

you work 10 to 12 hrs a day do you think you really have time for a dog ,
I think a cat might be better or maybe a fish .
If we left our dogs for that amount of time there would be no apartment . LOL

English Bulldog. They have great tempers, and don't get too big for an apartment. Working as much as you do, you will need to invest in a doggie door so he or she can go outside to do their business. Bulldogs love to be lazy. But, always love it if you take them out. Always remember to ask your complex if there are any restrictions to having a dog. Such as size, weight, or breed. I think that a Bulldog will fit you well. Not too big, but not too small. Basset Hounds are another breed that you should look into. Wonderful, lazy, and fun to play with.

although 12 hours is a long time for a dog to be by itself and due to being stuck in the apartment all day will need to be walked every night. Will you be up for that after a long 12 hour shift?

A cat will be best suited to your lifestyle, dogs don't like to be alone, got to go for walks, they got to go outside to do their jobs, they bark and whine and it is not fair to keep a dog confined for that long in a cage. Cats on the other hand don't go for walks,go in a litter box, don't have to worry about the neighbors complaining because of noise, can be kept indoors so it won't bring any fleas in and will be healthier and safe for it.
