I would invite them if they invited you. I would also venture to send a thank you reply if you get invited to a place regardless if its a kids party or not. Teaching kids etiquette at a young age is a good thing never to late to start.

i have thrown many birthday parties for my daughter, we just had one, as a matter of fact...she is 10...so i think i have a reasonable amount of expertise on this subject :)
i think that you should invite EVERYONE in your child's class...that is just my opinion (you can SELECT who you want to invite of all the other kiddies she knows)...i know how hurt my daughter is when she doesnt get invited to someone else's party and i dont want to be the cause of someone else's hurt feelings...granted most kids dont show up because they have sports, family gatherings, parents dont want to spring for a gift, etc...but it does ensure a better turn out as opposed to if you had only invited a select few.
you dont really have to worry about children that your child does not get along with showing up either...i have never had this happen in 10 years of throwing my daughter birthday parties, and we have had every type party imaginable in a small town...pool parties, skating parties, etc....children who dont like your child simply dont come....
however, you might want to write a note on the invites...*any child left unattended will receive a free puppy* so this doesnt turn into a big babysitting party for you ;) people who need to drop their child off should call you and ASK ;)

Well sure, unless there is a specific reason you shouldn't invite them (problem children etc)..it's just being decent..unless it's afinancial problem...which most people are very understanding of....we usually get gifts for the kids that come to our parties..nothing fancy, just little grab bags and candy..the kids love it.

we always invite kids if ours have been invited to theirs, it is just manners
we also normally hire a pool or something & invite the whole class so no one is left out

I wouldn't think so. Many "bratty" kids invite many others to the party because so few come. It is not necessary to return the invitation.
