I started to by getting rid of all my commercially prepared "premium" dog food and have switched to a home cooked diet. Got the recipes from a woman who had done so months ago and had three sick dogs who are now thriving and WELL.
It's far better than any of the commercial fancy wrapped garbage that is killing and making animals sick. There will be more recalls to come, but already so much has been recalled and animals keep getting sick. One of my dogs kept getting blood in her urine and I will see how she improves with a home diet approved by a Vet. I am GETTING RID OF ALL COMMERCIAL STUFF UNTIL THE FDA AND INVESTIGATORS CAN DECLARE ALL COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD SAFE AND DISCLOSE WHAT IS IN THAT GARBAGE THAT DOES NOT MATCH THE PRETTY PICTURE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE FOOD PACKAGE.

And to the person below who is feeding the pet prescription food from the VET, DO YOU NOT REALIZE HOW MUCH PRESCRIPTION FOOD HAS BEEN RECALLED LATELY, DUE TO CONTAMINATION?

Could I get your recipe please? I would love to quit feeding my babies this crap. I'm scared to death that the food I feed them is gonna be recalled. If you don't mind I would love that recipe. - catluver1997@sbcglobal.net. THX

I have always cooked for my dog. I was going to do the raw diet but 3 different vets said the meat should be cooked and no bones. He gets chicken meat without skin. He prefers it stewed or grilled. He likes some beef but he is not keen on minced turkey which I give him to try to slim him down. Occasionally he will eat the meat I cut off pork chops. He does really love barbecue. He eats a little Solid Gold dog food which is a specialized food that some pet stores carry and it is great for allergies and skin problems it has no wheat, gluten, soy or other grains or by products.

Many years ago (9 when I rescued him) I decided I would not feed him those dog foods from the grocery store or even the pet shop. I made the decision to cook for him and he is 11 now and very healthy. It makes me really sad all those poor pets died and are sick because people are careless.

well, I have three dogs, of which 2 have had serious problems with red mange. the vet said that it was 75% incurable so we started with the chemical injections and Mitmax baths, and of course the "wonderful perscription dog food" in the end they lost most of their hair and lost a lot of weight. One day I met an elderly Chinese man in the park, he told me that if I listened to him and did what he said the dogs would be cured in a few weeks time. so I said why not and this is what we did. 1. green tea, both to drink and as an aditive in their food. 2. cut all salt out of the diet. 3. feed a mixture of boiled pig skin, brown rice, liver, lean beef and chicken. we also add some steamed carrots. 4. lots of sunshine and exercise 5. And finally use a salt water bath instead of the mitmax (sea water is best)
My point is that the change in diet has made new dogs out of them all. now my dogs turn up their noses to storebought foods. If you do use a raw diet, I suggest regualr deworming.

I use Innova Dog food and am thinking about switching to TimberWolf Organics Dog food.

There are alot of dog foods that you can get that arent commercial grade and are amazing for your dogs. You can look on the ingredients list to find out what is in your dog food.

There is one brand, California Natural, who uses ONE protein, ONE carbohydrate and ONE fat.

So not ALL dog food is crap. Look into hollistic and organic dog food. What I feed my dogs, Innova, has no fillers or WHEAT (recall), corn or by products. They WONT be affected by the recall, and neither will .. California Natural, Karma, Mother Nature, TimberWolf Organics and Canidae, Blue Buffalo and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul.

You can cook for your dogs, and so can other people. But just so people know, there ARE GOOD dog foods out there that arent manufactured by these 'big' companies w/ the food recall.

Your dog would benefit so much more from a raw diet.

I've been feeding raw for two years now, my newest addition is about to make the plunge as well.

Cooking gets rid of vital nutrients that dogs need. Dogs digestive systems aren't set up to digest cooked foods very well at all.

Here is a great site to dispell some of the myths surrounding raw diets. I've started with the "cooked' myth.

Vets get paid for endorsing food. If not in money, then in free food. Clinics and hospitals are businesses just like any other, they need to make rent just like the rest of us.

Trust me, I was responsible for food orders at the vet clinic where I worked.

JUST BECAUSE A VET SAYS IT'S GOOD DOESN'T MEAN IT IS.

Please do your own research. Feed your dogs whatever you want, but don't blindly take anyone's word for it.

I don't feed my dog the average "commercial food". If more people stop buying this crap, changes will be forced to occur.

Actually, no I won't boycott the food I use. I use premium pet food, not the junk found on the shelves of pet stores or grocery stores. If more people did this, there wouldn't have been such an issue. I use food only available through my veterinarian.
