I went to Catholic school and now I'm a college student. I would like to know how people do not believe in evolution and also why people assume just because someone believes in evolution that it means they don't believe in God. Maybe Evolution is God's hand at work??? But the way evolution is put down in this country kinda reminds me of how the Catholic church put down science in the Dark Ages.
Your Thoughts?

You know I heard a Jewish man talk on TV before saying that we take their book(First Testament or Tora) to literal, and to me that makes alot of sense. It should be a guide, because after all it was written by man. Inspired by God, but not written by God.

My argument is in Biology (which is not my major just a course I had to take, so I can't debate much in this field) I learned that modern medicine and treatment comes from evolution and we can even see evidence of evolution in bacteria we fight off. Thanx for all the answers and I do not discredit anyone for believing anything, I know not everyone shares mine and maw your right it does make life interesting. But if someone wants to say dinosaurs and man were on the earth at the same time, i need to meet your pot dealer.

Thank you ranting Rach your what I have been waiting for but i thought u would be on the right not the left but i'll treat people on both radical sides the same. If you want my simple answer the Bible should not be taken literally. Yes I said it my mom would probably disown me but I believe it to be guidelines and stories with morals to live a better live not actual truth. I Believe in God and Modern Science and I don't think they have to fight each other.

I read recently an article that struck me... evolution is right under our nose and very clear. Viruses are a living organism... its purpose is to survive, which is every living being's purpose. So we develop new drugs to combat these viruses, what do they do, they evolve and survive. We have proof that several different species of humans existed but only one became dominant and survived... because they evolved with their environment and learned. Evolution exists if people want to admit it or not. I don't know if we came from a pool of goo but I do know we have evolved in what what we are today. Two people weren't just dropped from the sky that looked identical to us now and they populated the earth!

So nice to hear that word.......moderate. Nice change.
Anyhow I am an atheist and love truth, I require evidence for my beliefs and evolution certainly has the entire spectrum of these, just like the theory of gravity, I accept it.
I am from Australia and so would not assume (unless on yahoo answers where high proportion of literal christians) that someone who believes in evolution, does not believe in a god. I may question why one would need to believe in a god(evolution and the bible especially the OT are no friend of each other), or how they believe in a god (as evolution shows progression from simple to complex, not the reverse which you imply) but I would not assume that they do not believe in god. I have seen Oxford theology professors say they are christian when they are nearly as much of an atheist as I am.
I think your analogy of the dark ages is very relevant though, with ID in mind. Congrats.... I would far prefer to argue the issues with someone like yourself than a fundy, any day.

The Catholic Church isn't in the dark ages for the MOST part, although the spiritual truth they teach is MOSTLY correct, their manner of dissemination, manmade doctrine and dogma are incorrect. I wish Roman Catholics would read the Bible on their own with the spiritual eyes of a child that Jesus says to, Catholics have all the tools they need to "get it" and get what Jesus was truly about.
It's no secret the Nag Hammadi library came out when it did, it did to shed enlightenment on a generation of people who can't see the finer lines of detail in the Bible. However, the Church says its the sole salvation and the sole diseminator of truth, well actually, Jesus Christ is the salvation and truth. The baptism of the Holy Spirit will come to those Catholics who read the Bible and truly believe and understand. I was, and now I'm a Gnostic Christian. We are just the Catholics who are out of the closets anyways. :)

How can you believe in God and Evolution? The word of God (aka the bible) states that God created man, and he created the world in seven days.
Evolution states that we evolved from an amoeba, and over the 4 billion years that earth has been orbiting we gradually became what we are now.

i tend to agree. Evolution conflicts with a literalist interpretation of the Genesis creation/fall story, no more, no less. Imagine if God DID create us through evolution. How disappointed would he be that so many of his most vocal followers were completely ignorant of by far his finest work?

I have no problem with anyone saying they believe evolution was caused by a god. What gets me is when they claim to have evidence that it was their god. If there is a god then he is universal not just limited to one religion or even one planet(I don't think we're alone, call me crazy if you want).

Some prefer to believe they can't evolve. But let's keep evolving and hope they figure it out some where along the road.

I go to college. I had 9 people in my British Literature Class, and I was the only person to believe in evolution. It made me feel very sad to know such bright people could be so blind sometimes.
