Well, this link to a pdf about walk-in volunteering opportunities may help you: http://www.aidsnb.com/2004/pdf/walkin.pdf

Also, have you considered things like picking up trash in a local park or neighborhood? Without more specific information about where you are located and what kind of service you want or are required to do, I can't help much more than that.

Volunteering in general is about matching your areas of skill to a particular service need. Are you good with htlm or computers for example? There are a lot of volunteer opportunities you could take part in then right over your computer and right from home. Do a search for "on-line volunteering."

Do you like animals? Try local animals shelters and veterinary clinics, maybe even 4H.

Do you like children? Try local shelters, orphanages, Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs.

Do you want to work with people? How about soup kitchens, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, etc?

I hope you find an area that interests you. Good luck!

I doubt if you will find many nonprofit organizations that will allow you to just "show up" and volunteer. Most nonprofits organizations need to have time to be prepared for volunteers when they come to help.

First of all, they need to make sure there is really work that needs to be done for the agency and the volunteers. Volunteers don't want to take time out of their day to help if they are not really needed. Organizations don't want to waste your valuable time.

Secondly, it takes time for the organization to prepare the work for volunteers do. This means they must have staff available to oversee the activitiy, they must assemble the tools or supplies needed to do the activity, and they need to know they will have enough volunteers to complete the activity.

All of this planning on the part of the organization makes the volunteer activity productive for both the volunteer and the agency. This is why you will need to go through the intake process for the agency. I have managed volunteers as a career for over 18 years and rarely have I been able to effectively use a volunteer who just "shows up".

If your time is limited, look for a Hands On Network affiliate in your community. They offer project-based volunteer projects that don't require a lot of advanced prepararation on the part of the volunteer (but do allow a few days). http://www.handsonnetwork.org/

Also, you can find short-term volunteer opportunities by zip code through the Points of Light Foundation, http://www.1-800-volunteer.org

YES SURE! What about checking with your local police department. I used to walk for PAC~Tac (police and citizens together against crime) IT was fun, I got a make-shift uniform and a radio! They train you and everything. But the best part is the police back you up!

Yes, there are. Just like walk in and say
you want to volunteer some time helping
them. If you have half a brain, they'll
find something for you to do.
