I'm buying a bunch off a seller on ebay for my crafts, I was just wondering if the scraps would be safe for my dog to eat. He loves rawhide!!! The seller told me it was commercially tanned elk rawhide. Thanks!! Busters life may be in your hands!!

My pup had to have surgery because of a rawhide. Afterwards (of course) I was advised that dogs should never have rawhides, pigs ears, Greenies or jerky. I wish I had known about this $1,500 ago. No one seems to tell people these things until too late. I always bought my dogs pigs ears for treats & the vet said that they were a death sentence. I wish someone had told me before I purchased them. They should be illegal. Stuff that is unsafe for humans is automatically pulled off the shelves but no one seems to have the same respect for our furkids.

I'm not sure, but I do know that rawhide that is processed with formalin/formaldehyde is the rawhide that does not digest and can become an intestinal blockage. You might check to see if that fits the bill. Find out what it is processed with. If it hasn't been processed specifically to eat, then it's probably not a safe bet.

I don't recommend any rawhide.

Rawhide isn't very digestable, and is a big cause of intestinal blockages. Pigs ears are the same.

They also leave a nasty film on the teeth, so they really aren't good for the teeth either.

I'd recommend bully sticks instead. These are digestable and not treated with some of the nasty chemicals rawhide is.

NO! Commercial tanning process involves chemicals that should NOT be ingested. One of the ingrediants is glutaraldehyde:
"Glutaraldehyde is a colourless liquid with a pungent odor used to sterilize medical and dental equipment. It is also used for industrial water treatment and as a chemical preservative. However, it is toxic, causing severe eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, along with headaches, drowsiness and dizziness."

I wouldn't feed my dog rawhide, it's very hard for them to digest and it gets soft and gooey and some dogs may choke on it (my dog almost did). I now prefer to feed my dogs all natural beef chews, which are 100 % digestable and they don't get all soft like the rawhides so my dogs don't choke on them.

I wouldn't chance it. Some dogs eat it and are OK, but I work in an emergency animal hospital and see the problems that can occur.

If your dog likes raw hide, there are processed raw hide treats you can feed him that are 100% digestible.

No. It gets caught not only in the dog's trachea, but can also cause ruptures in the small intestine. Please think twice before feeding rawhide to Buster.

You are totally fine tanning while pregnant, and the baby will be fine. I suggest using tanning lotion instead of tanning oil but either is still fine. Just stay hydrated. Have fun!
