Atheism is definately growing faster than you'd expect. Generally it seems to be that the smarter the population gets, the more it dismisses it's silly beliefs in religion.
In a country like America, you'd be hard pressed conducting some sort of research into this as you'd almost immediately be attacked for it by all the fanatics.
Here in Australia, i feel more than comfortable telling people im an Atheist and i've found an incredible number of people who share the same opinions.
In countries with ACTUAL freedom of speech, you'll find a lot of people will be comfortable to share that they're atheist.

Eg:
France: 32% Atheist and further 32% Agnostic

Goodluck getting any real figures out of the USA... the church's would be on you like that.

The U.S. is still behind on this and remains a religious based country for the most part. Until we accept that not believing in a god is ok publicly then we'll continue down that road. I get sick of hearing all these politicians throwing that at us, how religious they are so I'm a good person. So many people use religion for the wrong reasons anyway, to make them look better and as a crutch. But we have made a lot of progress as a society and excepting that a lot of people just don't need to believe in a god any more. Now people can have a voice and not be looked down upon like they would have been even 40-50 yrs ago.

Since many of the champions of Christianity are falling over with feet of clay, the following seems to be waining.
Also the kids of the baby boomers are aging; the age that sees the world in black and white is fading.
Lastly, the society is changing. the major turning points of our generation, 9/11 and the Iraq War has bittered many people on the promises of the Religious Right.

Rejection of organized religion is DEFINITELY growing. There are many studies that support this. At the same time, polarization of the fundamentalists is increasing, because they see what is happening.

More and more people are doubting and questioning, but I don't believe they are going in wholesale for atheism. It's still a little too black and white, and probably will be for a long time to come, unless we can discover what happens after we die, or figure out how to create life from elements.

Education is the key to the success of atheism.
In most modern civilized countries atheism is growing.
When the USA will finally decide to take care of their public schools education and atheism will also spread there.

Already atheism is growing in europe. The USA is just really behind the times in a lot of things. As people grow and more knowledge is acquired, people begin to move away from god because more things are explained.

not in u.s., in accordance to the census (which isn't a hundred% precise) there are basically 2.4 introduced atheists in u.s.! and in step with possibility an predicted 15% % if we comprise agnostics, different secular ideals and the atheists who're too afraid back out. Atheism is a perception equipment yet that is not a faith, by way of fact there is not any greater deity(or deities) to worship and there is not any e book stating "the thank you to be an atheist" ultimately it relies upon on the atheist, atheist as a dictionary definition is devoid of god however the perception equipment of atheism is many of the time in step with evolution, this is a perception in technological expertise not the worship of it. there is not any stable and undesirable, that is basically a faith turning out to be. maximum atheists are not extremists, and in the event that they are they don't reason severe acts of violence against the different. (alongside with bombing planned parenthood, or terrorism of many extremist religions) yet in Europe SECULARISM not atheism in particular is turning out to be plenty swifter than formerly or u.s.. There are merely some in specific center jap countries, and maximum of them do not state it by way of probable awful punishments they'd get carry of. Atheism is merely as ethical and merely as Christianity and its branches and Islam and its branches, yet there is stable and undesirable in the two. Its merely that atheism has no e book stating the thank you to act, so any kinds of incorrect doing or terrible acts against humanity isn't led to of the persons religious extremism however the guy himself as a guy or woman. faith/perception structures are eye-catching and could be respected and dealt with a similar. Not a chance. Religious people reproduce like bunnyrabbits and atheists are mostly a bunch of guys. Darwin never said anything about the survival of the smartest. There are 200 million insects for every human on earth. Collectively they weigh about 29 times as much as we do. Ants alone make up 15 to 20% of the entire land-dwelling biomass. I don't know about their religious beliefs.

It is growing... but it will be hard for it to become the majority. This is simply because the Catholic Church is also still growing world wide... one of the only Christian churches that is. And they have a huge lead on everybody.

In my opinion, the more education a person has in history the more likely that they will be an agnostic or an atheist. It's hard to believe in any of these religions if you know how the dogma was created.
