I don't think respect is what you will gain if you are aggressive to the point of stepping on others.

A person who knows their job and can think for themselves by using initiative,and is willing to stand up and admit when they are wrong and NOT try passing the blame;THIS is the person who EARNS my respect.
Be careful about using aggression to get what you want in life. The people you step on have a long memory and someday,YOU will get stepped on too.

"You don't need respect if you have a gun"

If they are afraid of you, then they do NOT respect you....
Gain their respect another way

Yes. You should want people to respect you for being a good person--not becoming hostile and bullying or forcing them to respect you.
