i have just recently, approx. 1 week ago adopted a little silky terrier, which hasn't been spayed yet. she was living in a cage for 2 years and has no idea how to live in a home enviorment. she was very hyper and restless. she has calmed down, however ever since i've got her i noticed that she vomits alot thus making me think that she might be pregnant. i have no idea when she could have been mated but i think the father must be a little maltese with her in a cage.
now how what do i do?
how to i know for sure she is pregnant?
when should i take her to the vet and get her checked?
She has gained a little weight, but only on her tummy?? (suspicious i know!)
she is very clingy and calmed down but i don't know if it's because she is happy in our home and relaxed or if she is pregnant.
EVEN IF she is, what do i do? how do i prepare for the puppies! what are the essentials? i have read up on it a little bit however it's always better to ask and get an answer...so any answers? suggestions?

thank you very much for answering so fast! i guess i am just worried about my little girl! :)
following on to your questions. i just had a huge vet bill to pay for my other little doggy as he was very ill when i rescued him.
i read that you can't see anything until like the 2-3rd week into the pregnancy? now i don't know when she was mated but can u tell like a few days later if she is pregnant?
also if she is pregnant can anyone recommend me a great website where i can read up on the birth, what i need etc?
oh and i read you need a whelping box...can i build one? not out of wood as i have no idea where i could get the wood here and i am awful at building stuff, but can i buy a puppy pen and have a basket in it? something like that?

well i did bring her to the vet the moment i got her as she had a skin condition and i was worried she would be contagious and the vet gave me some medicine to put on her and checked her over. she has been checked over and she seemed to be fine. but maybe we, the doc and i were sidetracked by her skin problem and didn't do a through check up. i mean we definately didn't think to check for pregancies! but i think the best thing to do is just bring her to the vet and get everthing double checked. keeps my mind at ease as well.

right brought her to the vet yesterday and checked her up! no worms and he can't tell if she is pregnant or not but she's got some tablets that are ok for pregnant dogs and hopefully that will be that but i need to go back to get her checked cuz if she is pregnant it'll only show in 2 weeks.
i do hope she's not as i have rescued 2 dogs as no one wanted them but i find it extremely hard to terminate life...ah we'll see..
thanks to everyone who helped me and calmed me down alot. cheers!!

Please SEE A VET NOW! That should have been the first place she went when you got her. Where did you adopt her from? It is very bad when rescues are adopting out intact animals, especially mill dogs. Bless your heart that you're going to do it, but a miller could just crank out more pups She doesn't necessarily have to be pregnant. It could be Pyometra which can kill her. She could be loaded with worms.

good for you for rescuing this little girl. first take her to the vet and get her checked. vomiting is usually not a sign of pregnancy in dogs, so with her poor history she may need immediate vet care, or a special food until her stomache calms down a bit. also make an appointment to get her spayed, even if she is pregnant. i know this may sound cruel to some of you, but it sounds like she's been through enough and isn't in the best health. plus you probably don't know much about her genetic history and problems. you could not only be putting your new pet at risk by allowing her to continue through a pregnancy, but by allowing her to have more pups that may or may not be healthy it will just be adding to the problem that you rescued her from. the best thing for her is to have her spayed and let her enjoy just being a loved pet! good luck.

If you think she might be pregnant, do not give her ANYTHING until she sees a vet. No de-worming meds (unless the package says it is safe for pregnant dogs), no human med-nothing. I think you should get her to the vet as soon as possible so they can determine whether or not she is pregnant, and then go on from there if she is. If she is not pregnant, something else is wrong with her, and that is why it is extremely important for you to get h er in for a check up and some blood work.
Good luck!

Please have her vet checked. I've been around several pregnant dogs & they don't normally vomit. Their gestation is only 63 days so you really don't have much time to waste. If she is pregnant, they can take an xray to tell you how many there are & how far along she is.
Some of the essentials for puppy birth are:
- A comfortable quiet place for the birth & to raise them
- Learn how to take her temp so you'll know when to expect labor
- Plenty of towels, dental floss & scissors to cut the cords & pull out the afterbirth
- a scale & pen w/ paper to document their birth & weight
- And PLEASE don't leave her alone to give birth. Too many things can go wrong so if you can't be with her, try to have someone stand in your place.
Good luck! And if she isn't pregnant, please have her spayed. Then you won't have to go through this again.

First things first, you might want to worm her. I suggest Panacur at your local vet. A dog will vomit when it has worms.
Now if she is pregnant you will be able to really tell around the 5th week in her belly, she will be big. She will carry the puppies for 60-63 days.
Take her to vet and they can let you know if you have puppies or worms on your hands. Also ask them how you need to prepare for the puppies if she is pregnant.

It is usual for pregnant dogs to vomit if they are pregnant, there must be something else there. But you can take her to the vet (recommended), especially if you notice her tummy getting bigger to check for pregnancy. She may not be pregnant, but becoming more comfortable in your home. I would bring her to the vet for a check, and go from there. If she happens to be pregnant, there are a lot of great websites on how to whelp puppies. Just gotta search for them. And ask your vet, he'll tell you everything you need to know! Good luck!

Vomiting is not a typical symptom of pregnancy in dogs, it sounds like something's wrong.

A vet can tell if a dog is pregnant before she starts to show. Please take her in, as pregnancy or illness, she needs to be seen.

Whatever her condition is, a vet is the best person to advise you on what to do. Also be aware that if a dog starts vomiting after starting ANY medication it needs to be reported to the prescribing vet.

Pregnant dogs do not vomit, and they do not have "morning sickness" as in humans.
It sounds to me as you adopted a puppy mill dog. If she's vomiting, and her tummy is getting bigger, it may be because she has a fatal condition called "pyometra" which is an infection of the uterus, very common in puppy mill dogs. I suggest you get her to a vet as soon as possible, as you might risking loosing her.
