Can I say "first name" using this construction:

ما أُولى أسمها؟
(What's her first name?)

Or

ما جَدّكَ أُولى أسمه؟
(What's your grandfathers first name?)

I am not interested in another word for "first name". I just need to see if I can use أُولى (or some for of it) and أسم

"What's her first name" is "Ma huwa esmooha al awal"

What's your grandfather's name" ----> "Ma huwa esmoo jadooki (if you adress the question to a female) (or jadooka if it is adressed for a male) al awal"

and yes you can use أُولى and أسم it is right, Im a native arabic speaking, so feel free to ask if you have any other questions, though I dont have an arabic keyboard keys...

I don't have arabic keys on my keyboard\
but if you read this you will hopefully understand? It is arabic writen in english letters
" Ma huwa ismuka al awal?" ----> If you want to translate it exactly and by the same order it is gonna sound odd
" what's your name the first?" ---> here "the" is "al" in arabic

ما هو اسمها الأول ؟ - Ma huwa esmooha al awal

ما هو اسم جدك ؟ - Ma huwa esmoo jadooki

I am just following vanilla’s answer. This is what I think she has explained.

Hope it will help.

I'll go with Franko. "awwal" is first in Arabic and his construction is correct.

But, I wonder how relevent it would be to ask the question in Arabic, considering their customs and mores?
