Please don't get me wrong, this situation is not a joke and I do feel bad for all that has been effected. It is just plain horrible. But I ask this because people seek life insurance money too.

My question is,

What happens to the tuition money for the students who lost their lives at Virgina Tech? Does the school keep it? Does it go back to the families?

That's a very good question. I do not know for sure, but I think we can pose some potential plans. One that is very likely is that VT will keep it. It's very close to the end of the year, and the students money had to be paid. Even if you drop out of school, the school keeps the money you paid.

Also, VT is awarding all those who died postmortem degrees. That would make me assume they will keep the money. Again, I don't know for sure, but I believe they will keep the money and it will not be refunded to the families.

I have never attended VA Tech, so I haven't seen their contract, however, most schools have contracts that spell out exactly what their refund policies are. These policies usually make allowances for sliding scale refunds up to a certain date (e.g.: withdrawal within the first 30 days). They also almost always offer tuition insurance, which covers the cost of tuition if, for instance, a student becomes incapacitated due to an extended illness.

You may be able to get a copy of the tution contract by contacting the admissions office of the college.

no i think it's handled as if they dropped out so the school keeps the money. maybe if the would have been killed in the first 3 days of classes they could have gotten their money back.

but no one will ask for tuition money back. they either won't do anything, or they will sue for negligence (boo..)

Based on reported police inadequacies, my guess is that they will offer the families financial settlements to avoid being sued for wrongful death.
