How warm do you think it needs to be before you allow your child to wear shorts to school? My daughter is complaining because I won't bring the shorts out for school yet, but her friends have already worn shorts to school more than once in the past two weeks. I felt it was not warm enough, but maybe Im wrong?I always felt that mid-70's was the best Im just curious.

You are right, besides tell your daughter that you are not her friends parents, and if they want to wear shorts, that's fine, be she would have to wait.

All you need to let her do is wear shorts once. If it really is too cold for her, she will realize it and won't wear them again. If she feels ok in them then you should let her wear them. This is one of those pick your battles things that you have to decide if it's really worth it. Clearly, if it snowing or really cold, you should help a younger child pick appropriate clothing. But once they're older or the issue is that they 'might' be a little chilly, I personally think that is a battle I would not worry about. The more you try to control on this issue, the more she will fight you and when she gets older and does have control she'll choose the shorts. The whole point is to teach her why you think shorts aren't appropriate, not just that you don't want her to wear them. Let her wear them, she'll decide whether or not it's too cold.

i would say, once it hits at least 60-65 in the mornings it should be ok to wear shorts to school..it may be 70 in the mid afternoons, but the mornings could still be a little chilly. this could be a problem if she has a long wait for the bus, or if she walks to school

My kids both go to a private school (in Minnesota) and they have a dress code that states shorts can only be worn in September and May.

At home I have let them wear them twice, although I think it was about 73-74 at the time.

That is about right I think. Although as a teenager I wore shorts in three feet of snow to school just because I could. It is best to make sure that she is safe enough and isn't opening herself up to catching colds or anything else. If anything 65 is nice too. BTW I seemed to catch one doozy of a cold every year growing up...my own fault.. so the shorts thing caught up with me and will to her also if it is too cold for them.

being as kids seem to adjust to the weather more quickly then adults do and when they are outside they are usally playing pretty hard id say upper 60s but you also have to think about if its sunny or windy or cloudy that affects what they should wear too

if your kids feel they can wear shorts and not get cold..let them

I live in Indiana. When I was growning up my mom's rule was 70 degrees or warmer for shorts. So my rule is the same for my kids.

Ok, I live in CA and out here, even though everyone is wearing shorts they are 1) Only doing it to attract guys or be sexy, 2) Freezing their butts off and 3) getting sick. Tell her that here on the west coast, unless you want to get sick, you aren't wearing shorts. So there.
