God has a purpose for your life. That purpose is your destiny if you allow it to be. Without God, there is no destiny...only random events.

destiny - the predetermined, usually inevitable or irresistible, course of events
A common debate about God is His "sovereignty," or supreme power. Does He control everything everyone does, thinks, feels, believes? If He has chosen every factor of everything in history ever, then man, no matter how hard he tries to escape it, will do exactly what he was programmed to do since the beginning of time. If God allows free will, then what are the limits to it? What does God allow, and what does God keep under His control? Or does God just watch everything happen like it's a t.v. (like it's entertainment)?
This is just an expanded version of your question. I can't answer it for you, but I could give you my opinion (which I don't think carries any weight). If you have more questions, you can e-mail me at seth.p@centrum.cz.
As for the difference between destiny and God, I don't think it's important to take a position as to if there's a difference or not. What will happen... will happen... whether it's our decision or God's.

Destiny is a subject that most people avoid and I'm glad up brought it up!
Some people do fear destiny because of the unknown and the fear that they are not in control of their own.
well I for one do not let destiny control me. I live for today or the moment because that is all that I can control, like doing next right thing. you should not worry about tomorrow because tomorrow has enough trouble in it's self.
I know of only one true destiny that awaits and that is death and that falls under the tomorrow rule! I have no control so I can't be bothered by it!
As for God.
Another subject that will most people avoid.
This is my personal view and belief.
the difference is Free Will.
We all know we will die and thats like i said our true destiny right!
well where we go when our time comes is part of Free Will.
we can choose to believe or not. God gives us a choice of whether to believe or not to believe.
So to me the difference is death that is unavoidable.
and the choice to believe in life after death or not.
As for me I believe!!!!

Religious definitions are fat with rules dictated by religious leaders, a higher power concept has no requirement of obedience to any rulership or outmoded rules. Higher power concepts have no need of personification in the sense that Abrahamic perscribes. The Christian is controlled by the will of others, and those who only regard a higher power find concentration in the idea to govern their self better according to their own ideals.

God is the Supreme Person who is the origin of everything that exists. Destiny (called karma in Eastern philosophies) is a subtle law working in this material world, where you basically reap the results of your actions, both pious and impious.

I do not believe in destiny. I believe our lives are the product of the choices we make. We are presented with many, many choices in life regarding just about every human endeavor. Moral codes, religious laws, philosophical teachings, health class hygience teachings, psychological teachings, peer pressure, are all attempts to influence or even "control" our choices, but in actuality is it up to us to make the decisions that form our life.
To me God is an abstraction that teaches many contrary moral ideas in the various religions he supposedly inspired or affected. I don't believe God exists. But I do believe that I have to make choices. Life provides me with them every day.
I don't believe in "tailoring" my choices to convince others or illustrate to others that I am "destined" to be God's chosen one or among God's chosen people. The motive there is self-elevation, a disgusting motive to me.
If I have guidelines within which i try to stay when I make choices, I like to them be centered around nurturing of myself and others, cooperation, does it bring happiness to myself and others, and basically some gut feeling of what is right. And yeah, I'd probably burst into a burning building to try to save a crying baby. It's a clear choice of whether to do it or not. I would do it. But my motive wouldn't be God's approval or proving myself to be "destined" as a hero, etc. Just the right thing to do. There are other choices centered around doing the "greater good" ... these can be made erroneously or correctly due to biases, misunderstandings, or true intelligence and perspicacity on the part of the individual making the choices. Again the choices the individual makes affects that person's life and the lives of people around him or her.
Calamaties, tragedies, accidents, good forture all present us with choices to make. The origin of these events may not be our choosing, but we deal with them by making choices.
What is death? That is when you are done with life and have no more choices to make.
I am sort of an extentialist, if you haven't guessed already.
