If you mean you want to use a CD like a floppy --
I have two burners - a Samsung and a Dell.
Both require the user to use CD/RWs and they must first be formatted with the program powering the burner - before data can be copied to them.

Also, you cannot read the CD/RW on another computer unless you download a small reading program from the software's website.

I began using CD/RWs for backups. Now, with flashdrives that hold so much more, are easily transportable, and way down in price, I no longer bother with CD/RWs.

first your cd-dvd rom drive have to be a "CD-RW" (READ/WRITE combo) otherwise a cd-writter is needed to write the files on a blank CD-R or CD-RW disk, the CD-RW isa better as you can use those again and again ,windows xp has a default cd-burning facility otherwise in earlier versions you have to use any cd-burning software (for example Nero cd burner.etc.)
