If you ignore him, he'll stop.
I gave my dog table scraps and 'people' food, and - now - she's a diabetic who requires a shot of insulin twice a day just like any human diabetic, plus her health is poor. I wish I'd never given her the very food that ruined her health now, but - at the time - I thought I was being good to her....

This is a learned behavior, and every time you reward his begging, he thinks he's doing a good thing.
My lab and I attended dog training that really should have been called "Handler" training. She described taking her four (4) German Shepherds to the vet at the same time. All the dogs were well-behaved, didn't cry while in the waiting room, etc. Someone asked her how she managed it and her answer made absolutely perfect sense:
When you're at the vet with your dog, the dog is nervous. He cries, and comes to you for comfort. What do you do? You pet him, right?
Psst: Guess what? HE LIKES THAT!!! So he cries some more, so that you pet him some more!
If the dog is exhibiting a bad behavior or something you want to correct, scold the dog. Do not reward bad behavior.
Any questions?

I will second what most people are saying. Don't give it to him. You are the boss. Besides, how do you know he wants the food you are eating? Just looking at the food could mean that he is just curious, not necessarily after your food!
But I will however recommend NOT removing him from the situation. This will only teach him to avoid situations in which he doesn't get what he wants. Put him in a down stay and you eat. Alpha's eat before any other pack member, so eat with him in the room, THEN feed him.

First the dog needs some obedience training. once you have that done have in "stay" in another room at meal times. Remember in the scheme of things you are supposed to be the Alpha member of the pack. The dog just has not learned that part.

If you dont want him to beg because you arn't going to give it to him then, I'd either train him to stay in the other room while you are eating or put him in a bedroom while you eat. That way he's not begging and aggravating you and he can't get into trouble.

Good, dont give him anything from the table, its not good for him and it'll just make him a beggar. Sooner or later he'll figure out that he's SOL and stop begging.

So then don't give him any.. Teach him when you are eating that he is to sit and not bug .. If you don't want to give him anything, you have that right. After you are finished eating, give him some carrots, or other good fruit or vegetable, that way he thinks he is getting people food, and he is technically, but he is getting something that is good for him, good for his teeth too...

Continue to tell him no. If he starts to beg make him leave the area. Also you can keep a spray bottle of water near by. Spritz him if he begs. If he continues, put him out of the room while you eat.
