You don't need one to to fly in mexico. But you do need one to get back into the states, no matter if you are flying, walking, driving or swimming.

You don't need to have a passport, but you will need a valid ID. Unless you have a Mexican Driver's license or some sort of known government issued Mexican ID, then you will have to take your passport with you. Besides, I would not want to travel without it. If I am stuck somewhere I would like to have my passport with me.

Yes, you will need a current US passport to re-enter the country. The laws have changed very recenty so there is a huge backlog.

no you do not need a passport to fly within mexico.. however you do need one to get back home unless you plan to drive or walk across the border..
