A jet aircraft is a plane that is powered by a jet engine. I'm sure you have seen propeller powered aircraft such as a little Cessna or a World War 1 Fighter. A propeller just pulls the aircraft through the air because the blades are shaped like a wing. A wing produces lift. But because the blades are in a vertical position, they pull the plane forward.
A jet works differently. A big fan, with about 60 or more blades, are in the front of the engine. These blades are suck in a lot of air, and anything else in fron of it. The air then goes through a compressor, which squashes the air into more pressure. Some of this air goes into the cabin of a commercial airliner to make the passangers able to breathe at high altitudes. The rest of the air goes into a burning chamber where the air is mixed with fuel and then ignited. This creates a big blast of air that shoots backwards to move the airplane forward. The air also turns more turbines, or fan like structures, to make the rest of the engine run.
Look up jet under google or under images to see what one looks like and a more detailed explanation.

Fortunately for the sane part of the western world the Germans could not launch many of their considerable fleet of Me262 Stormbirds as the allies were able to blow up the fuel facilities. Toward the end of the war in the east the japs had built and stored around the country a fleet of jets built with german assistance. They were intended to be used for home defence in case of a US invasion. The invasion never came as the first atomic bombs brought a surrender. The jets were found and studied with ideas later incorporated into US and UK jets. The discovery type channels on Sky and cable TV have lots of programmes on this subject so if you can have a look at them.
