During the dark ages it was believed that when one sneezes that the soul leaves the body briefly and that saying god bless you would keep the devil from snatching your soul or some other nonsense like that

The phrase "God bless you" was actually started during the time of the black plague when the pope made a decree that since people were dying shortly after the last coughs and sneezes caused by the plague that the saying was much the same as absolving their sin. Therefore it was a way to preserve the soul and send the deceased heavenward. Call it a last blessing that stuck around and became common practice.

People believe or believed that when you sneeze your heart stops for one second or something like that. So people started to say God bless you. The German word for that is geshundheit.

Bart: Well if your souls real where is it?
Milhouse: It's kinda in here... and when you sneeze, that's your soul trying to escape. Saying god bless you crams it back in. And when you die, it squirms out and flies away!
Bart: What if you die in a submarine at the bottom of the ocean.
Milhouse: Oh, it can swim, it's even got wheels, incase you die in the desert and have to drive to the cemetary.

Interestingly, in many other languages God has nothing to do with sneezing - German 'Gesundheit!' translates to simply 'Good health!'

I thought it was started in the early centuries because they believed your heart briefly stopped when you sneezed. Not sure if its true or not, just what i was told.
