I tried it when I was a kid.... And the Umbrella Imploded!
I had better luck with sheets for effect.....but the landing was still a doozy.
I think now that I'm all grown up, I should apply some intellect and try gluing feathers to my arms and flap myself down.

I was seven years old, and I didn't use an umbrella. I tried to use a blanket as a parachute. It didn't work, which was a surprise to my seven year old self. I hit the ground hard, got the wind knocked out of me, but walked away without injury.

When I was a child, yes. I tried it out by jumping off the a/c unit, but wasn't impressed.
