I agree, it is probably the nickel in the alloy mix that they are allergic to. Platinum, Titanium, and tungsten are all pure metals, and all are hypoallergenic. Have them go to a jewelry store to look at the different styles available.

If she is allergic to the metal in rings, it is most likely from the nickle that is used to make gold harder and more durable. She should still be able to wear a metal ring, just not a low karat gold ring. I suggest trying a platinum (without nickle) or titanium ring before trying to find something that is non-metal. If possible tell her to borrow one of those from someone and wear it to test it out.

Usually people who are sensitive to metals are fine with yellow gold. That's how I am, and I'm fine with yellow gold rings.

I think if they stick around gold they should be ok. I have the same issue and my ring is white gold and I don't get hives or anything from it.
