No, taking them off will not hurt. You'll feel the pressure of them taking off the brackets but no pain. You'll keep touching your front teeth for the first couple days cuz you're not use to the feeling. Other than that, no pain. I would wear it as long as the doctor suggests. I wore mines less than they said and my teeth and moved and the retainers don't fit. Save urself trouble and wear it a lot for the first year and every night. Good luck!

Hec yes! it hurts when they come off, but not as bad as the day after you get them tightened..(ugghh, flashbacks). When the Dr. takes them off, your dots have to be popped off(tooth pliers) and your anchors have to be jimmied loose(tooth pliers and a hook) and pulled off of the molars. (Be prepared to have your teeth whitened almost immediately as the teeth will have stained around your dots). As for your retainer, most Docs recommend every night for the first year after: as the teeth will begin to move after the hardware is removed and until the gums stiffen up around the teeth's new place settings. Additionally, you will want to go back to the retainer if you notice any oddity with how they fit even after the first year. Realistically, you maybe wearing your retainer off and on for the next 5 years or more. Certainly more if you have habits like nail biting, teeth grinding, fork scraping etc. as these thing encourage tooth movement. Good Luck.

It doesn't hurt but when they burn the glue off of your teeth, it smells awful (sort of like burning hair). When I got my braces taken off, in like 2001, I was told to wear my retainer all the time for the first couple of months and then at night forever (I think). You will get sick of the retainer pretty quickly. You have to take it out every time you eat, drink, or brush your teeth and it's gross when you have to take it out at school to eat your lunch. It also gives you a lisp when you talk. I only wore my retainer for a couple of weeks and then I threw it in my dresser and I haven't touched it since. My teeth haven't moved and look the way they did when my braces first came off.

ERYNN,
THE ORTHODONTIST HAS A SPECIAL TOOL TO LIFT OFF THE BANDS AND ANOTHER ON FOR THE BRACKETS. THE RETAINER HAS TO BE WORN FOR AS LONG AS YOUR ORTHODONTIST SUGGESTS.
