Young man,
The Bible is Inspired of GOD. HE sent HIS SON so that we would have an opportunity to be in Heaven. Does that sound like HE is kidding to you? It certainly doesn't to me!! GOD created all things by the power of HIS WORD. You and I have a finite amount of time to get on track or we will forever be stationed in satan's realm. Please be aware that You can be saved if you only study and obey GOD's WORD. Could I assist you in any way?
Thanks,.

It is a good moral compass and more. Example: Keep free from fornication. If the world followed that and kept their pants zipped up, there would be no Aids epidemic or crisis with STDs. We did not know the trouble we could get into but our creator did. Israelites got laws on diet and cleanliness which kept them healthy. No man knew of germs until modern day. The creator did.

It is historical fact. Time and again, scholars have pointed to a reference and said that can't be true. It did not exist, only to find a few years later some tablet dug up somewhere saying it did.

Prophecy. We know when books of the Bible were written and exactly when some things happened. There were many years apart. When Jerusalem would fall both times; the king who would conquer Babylon and how; the Messiah coming, when, who, how, his family line. All these foretold minimum of 50 to 1000 yrs. before they happened. The Bible provides proof of being reliable in the past so we can believe in the prophecies in our future.

That brings us to hope. Because of the Bible, we can have hope for the future. Man not having to die anymore; an earth being restored to paradise conditions; sickness being done away with. Long dead loved ones resurrected to life on that earth. Man will never be able to do these things but, the creator will.

Finally, it gives us an overview of the world. Why things are the way they are? What is our place in this universe? After that the tough question of why M&Ms melt in your mouth not in your hand can be asked.

In my opinion, the "moral compass" analogy is correct, or at least how SHOULD be. I personally accept the bible tells many true stories, but several are exaggerrated to make a point, and there would doubtless be some that are pure fiction.

I believe Jesus existed and walked among us, and who made it his life's work to say "for god's sake, be nice to each other!!!". And surely, THAT is the point. By arguing about what is meant by this and that (not aimed at you, questioner, but at a world and churches who start wars over this stuff), we are doing exactly the opposite of what Jesus would have been trying to show people.

And what Zieg Heil said is correct, and it just goes to show again that we shouldn't take it too literally. The bottom line is BE NICE TO OTHERS, and it's really very simple. Ignore the specifics and get to the message behind the Bible in general.

On your journey through life, if you just try your best to love, forgive, be tolerant, show compassion and respect for all those around you, then there you have it - life, in a nutshell.

GOOD MORAL COMPASS???

It condones beating of slaves, subservient women, eternal punishment in a pit of fire, offering your son as a sacrifice (Abraham) - which by the way you would go to jail for today - going into cities and killing everyone there because they do not agree with your religion (Jericho), stoning of people for the smallest 'sin'...... etc.

And supposedly the 'best' thing that happened in the bible was a man being crucified???

I think the book is just sick!

Oh no, it's much, much more than that. It is the inspired word of God. And it is a very good guide on how to live you life if you take its contents in the proper context.

BTW, I think Brett A has the Bible confused with another religous book out there...

Science and religion are not mutually exclusive!

The bible is just a collection of old Jewish folklore used to scare little children into behaving..."GOD" is simply an imaginary friend for lonely or insecure people...who desperately want to believe that there is a BIGGER, BETTER, HAPPIER, RICHER life just around the corner, for you...All you have to do is strap alot of explosives around your body and go kill, kill, kill, as many people who disagree with your version of the next life,.. and GOD will love you and reward you.. after all you are his child and he (Jesus, Allah, Mohammad, George W)
demands your absolute obedience, by doing what other mortal men (preachers, clerics, prophets, chosen ones) tell you he wants you to do..Kill, decapitate, invade, enforce, liberate, fight them there..so you don't have to fight them here, etc etc...

And it's not that great a moral compass either...

The average Christian belief system is precariously balanced on a knife edge between knowledge and belief. Ages ago, knowledge was very little and balance was easy, but as time progressed that pile of knowledge has grown and it now threatens to throw the balance out. Their answer is to swap part of the belief with blank denial. Denial is an opposition to knowledge but it serves to maintain the balance - for the time being that is. Their precarious balance will fall like a house of cards soon. I just hope I'm alive to see it.

the Bible is like...oxygen for your heart. it has way more than fairy tale stories for sunday school. it actually refreshes your heart and puts like a steel shield over your heart to guide you through life. and it has inspiring scriptures like Psalm 1:1 and the very last book of Psalm is my favorite. and John 3:17 and John 3:16. i want you to look them up for urself instead of me telling you and you not going there. i know God exists-- He's like the foundation that holds the world together- even though it seems like its falling apart, He's still here. your still here. go out and tell the world like i am! wow i sound so poetic today. --

Not even. Much of the bible is not relevant to today and morality has advanced since the bronze ages.

It's a good moral compass if you like bronze age tribal "morality."
