Hey there. Accidentally cutting the quick is a memorable event; aside from your dog going "Aigh! That's the LAST time you do THAT to ME, buddy!" there's a lot of blood too. An experience to skip, in my opinion.
Does your dog have black or "clear"/white nails? It's easy to see the quick in a white nail, and very hard to tell in a black nail. If your dog's toenails are long, cut them gradually. The short, gradual clipping will make the quick retreat.
I find that if my dog cannot see me cutting his nail, he's far less twitchy. Bribing him with diced chicken or cheese helps, too. I pick up his foot, throw down those treats, clip one nail, and leave. Of course, ideally, you want your dog to look forward to you cutting nails, but not every dog is like that.
Good luck!

The quick is essentially the start of the toe, visible as a line where the white of the nail changes to the pink. Like us, some dogs have longer quicks than others. You can't shorten the quick unless you cut below it - and this is very painful for the dog and causes a lot of bleeding, so don't do it!
Just cut off the white of the nail and that should be fine.

Yes the quick does grow longer as the nail grows. To shorten the quick you would have to clip the dogs nails often (1-2 times a week) This will cause the quick to recede.

yes to everything above...if the nails are white they are easier to work with but even dark nails will show easier if you bend the paw and trim the nail from the underside...you will see the quik in the white nails and notice a sort of hollow on the darks. trimming little bits more often will help to shorten the quik.

Yup, quick does get longer as well.. If you want to work the quick back, keep cutting the nails. Each time you cut the nails the quick moves back a little farther, keep them nice and short and the quick is short.

Yes. that's why they need to be kept short, and if they get too long and then you cut them too short, their nails bleed.
