First off, I will not deny that religion many times has been used as a means to control the masses and has become very powerhungry and corrupt. Your argument is for one who interprets the Bible literally but if you give them this argument don't you think they will dismiss it without even thinking about it??
There are people who take the Bible as guidelines, how to live right, but not literally. Keep in mind that this book was written a LONG time ago and back then the culture was different, therefore the metaphores will make little sense if interpreted literally.
God is not Jesus nor the Holy Spirit. Think of a couple who is married. They are "joined as one" but there are still different people right?
Also, in your quote: "If a man beats his MALE or FEMALE slave..." I distinctly see the word 'male'. How do you get that Jesus is ok with beating women and not men? Actually, for his time Jesus was a rebel. He gave women a PLACE in society. He may not have given them sufferage or anything but he made them more equal and more important than they were already. Jesus let even the sinner follow him. That's the most important thing. He demonstrated that here on Earth we should not judge others. Judging is for God to do.
Point being, you can find a million ways to contradict any religion if you take it literally, but when you argue with literal arguments you only contradict the literal believers... not the rest of the normal ones who won't caste off our fingers if they offend us. :-P

You are an extremely unintelligent debater and should cease and desist. If you do not want to believe in the Bible than fine but do not lead others astray do to your ignorance.
The commandment you stated is taken completely out of context and without any historical or procedural background given. You give a misleading summation of what the Trinity is in order to further your condemnation of the Bible text. This type of debate would also try to deny the divinity of Jesus Christ based on His quote about the end times when He states that only the Father in Heaven knows the exact time of the end.
There is a distinct difference between each of the parts of the Trinity but they are still one. Next, if you are unwilling to include the historical changes which occur throughout the Bible than the rest of the argument is pointless. Finally, there are many thing that people will never understand about the Bible but the ONLY ABSOLUTE which is vital to accept is that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, He died for our sins, and that through His grace and forgiveness we are saved from eternal damnation. Period.

IN SHORT: Since slavery does not exist, the law is null, 'moot', irrelevant, etc . and we should not beat one another to unconsciousness!
IN LONG:
Think of God as the US government without all the bureaucracy; three divisions, each totally separate, yet one government. God, however always agrees with 'himself'.
That is in the Bible, But, you are exaggerating, pulling the words across the line, however you like to put it. You have to keep it in context! God was not saying that any man could beat any woman, nor that a man could beat his wife, nor vice versa, (Jesus would later say that a husband should be to his wife as Christ is to the Church (Ephesians 5:25). He was simply laying down a law for the propper treatment of slaves, since He used the system of slavery for metaphors later on...that can get into another sticky mess if people insist on not reading it right...
We are still 'under' many of the OT laws (I don't hold to that "under grace" business, seems like an opportunity to excuse sin, if you ask me), the Ten Commandments, for example, but Jesus said in the NT that some laws had had their time, and were irrelevant, such as the cleanliness laws (Titus 1:15). Thus, while it is not wrong to follow these laws, the decision to must be a personal choice, since we are not bound to them.
Note: I am not saying that God contradicted himself, only that He canceled a law He had laid down for the Israelites (knowing then that a time would come when it would no longer be necessary, since it had fulfilled its purpose of representing a later precept or somesuch.)
God Bless,
J
P.S. Aussie: (two below) I have read both and while I see much violence, discrimination, and self-contradiction in the Koran, there is no trace of these in the Bible. Moreover, if your wish were to come true, the whole world would soon regret it, for no book has influenced the world for good more than the Bible.

God the Father is the God of the OT. Because the law was a failure for Humanity. God sent his son Jesus to fulfill the Law and replace it with Grace. Jesus is the Son sent by the Father as John the Baptist said "Behold the lamb of God" in reference to Jesus. Since Jesus fulfilled the demands of the Law we now live under grace. Jesus is at the right hand of the Father. One day the Father will say "It is enough" and Jesus will return. The old testament Law was done away with.
Thus God is the God of the OT. Jesus is Gods representative in the NT. THUS YOUR QUESTION IS MOOT

The eye opener is that some people would rather take Biblical quotes and try to manipulate them to fit into evolutionary logic to twist it around.
God told the people of Israel at the time of Moses that He allowed divorce because they could not understand otherwise. The Bible also discusses the fact that God told the people that he gave laws to the people of Israel based on their understanding... In the New Testament, we are given a new commandment...to Love one another as ourselves. Jesus tried to teach a growing faith community how to live with each other.. But then again, Jesus felt that people had matured enough to deal with change and growth... I can tell here that He realized later that mankind has NOT made progress in this area.... so much for evolution.

You are correct.
Jesus is the God of the Old Testament and the New.
Now what you need to acknowledge is that our 19th to 21st century understanding of "slavery" is far different from that of the Old Testament.
"Indentured servanthood" was the primary method of "ownership of another individual. It was a contractual agreement for a specified period of time, during which the servant would work off a debt.
The other primary reason for slavery is when a people had been conquered.

Do we have slaves anymore? No. God says to love everybody, and not to hurt people. Slavery is very differant than the world today. If we again start having slaves then you might have an argument. God said do not eat pork, but then in the new testament said it was ok. The old laws are not applicable to todays life as they were back then.

Yes, it is true that this is in the Bible and that God gave this judgement on how to deal with Hebrew servants (Ex. 21:1). It is also true the Jesus/God/Holy Spirit are all one in the same. But the fact of the matter is that Jesus, by way of dying on the cross for our sins, made it possible for us to be free from those commandments & judgements. He essentially said, "look... this is the way you have to live to get into Heaven (rules), but I know it is impossible for you to live that way. So, I'll pay the debt of all your sin, if you'll just accept my payment and believe in me. Do that, and you will no longer be bound to that law."

There is definitely a rule of thumb in the old law..the rule was you could beat your wife with a stick..but the stick could not be thicker than the mans thumb.
Funny thing is we are not under the old law.
Jehovah is the God of the old and new testament.
Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting
no beginning or end
Jesus is Jehovah's son.
he was created first of Gods creations
Jesus had a beginning
Jesus came to earth to die for our sins.
There is no trinity.
Jesus preached love.

I think in your last paragraph you forgot to mention men. It's not just women. Also, Judaism is one of the few cultures that actually had punishments for killing a salve since slaves are considered property in ancient cultures.
I don't think God approved of slavery but like divorce He allowed it to occur.
