You not want Student Loans, you have to pay them back!!!!!

The most important word: FAFSA. This will get you all of your goverment need based aid. This has mainly to do with how much money you/your parents make. Fill it out before you do anything else. Also any financial aid forms your school requires so you can get aid from them as well. Inquire at the financial aid office about merit scholarships you would be able to apply for.

Next, look outside the college for scholarships. I got a lot of scholarships from my community, from community foundations. In my experience, these are easier to get than the ones you would find on fastweb.com.

But, finally, fastweb.com is worth a try. It is a free searchable database of scholarships. If you register and fill out a questionnaire, it will automatically notify you of new scholarships you might be interested in. Pretty nifty.

Your school should send you a report as to how much aid in grants and loans and scholarships they are providing. You can refuse or make the loans smaller if you'd like. It's important to remember that you'll have to pay those back eventually, with interest, so make sure you really need them before you accept them.

In general you want to get your free money first (scholarships, grants, savings, etc.) then apply for federal student loans (which have the lowest interest rates, but there's a limit to how much you can get). Start by filling out the FAFSA (fafsa.ed.gov) first, so the gov. can decide how much you're eligible for.

If that doesn't cover it, then apply for private student loans - which are given directly from banks. These loans are not guaranteed by the gov, so tend to have a higher interest rate based on your credit history.
