You have alot to think about...
Personally I love the Church...strange....I was raised by people that probably helped write HATE books against the church like "God Makers" I feel sorry for them. I think their hatred for the Church pushed me to look further into their claims and find out that the Church is a Gift from God.
"God Makers" was written by frustrated ex-mormons that did not get their way with the church. If you are going to read it...keep that in mind.
You need to learn things for yourself.
Place your faith in God and not man.
Unless he is called of God......

I'm Mormon, and I think you are wanting something like a do and don't list.
We don't drink coffee, tea, alcohol, (some don't drink sodas). We don't smoke tobacco, do drugs, or get tattoos.
We go to church on Sundays and live every day like it was Sunday (meaning we don't just show up for an hour or two on Sunday as if we were done being Christians for the week, we strive to live a Christ centered life 24/7).
We have clean fun, with family, friends, and other like minded individuals. Some general church wide hobbies in the States are basketball, scrap booking, volleyball, Scouts, camping, hiking, etc. Things we stay away from include gambling establishments, bars, places where the crudeness and courseness of the world are.
I guess to some extent, although it's a generalization, we may seem rather Ozzie and Harriet in a world of The Osbornes. But we like it and feel that not doing the things we don't do allows us more freedom to do what we want to do.

Hope this helps.

Well basically, we try to be as much like Christ as we can. We don't partake of anything unclean that will defile or harm our bodies in any way.
We have a living prophet on the earth today, his name is Gordon B. Hinckley.
Joseph Smith, a prophet of old, had a vision in a grove, when he knelt down and prayed for a testimony of which church was right. He saw Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ. He was told to join none of them. He was called by God to restore the gospel in full on the earth and that's what our church is, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We believe that the bible is true, we also believe that the Book of Mormon is true.
If there is any other questions you have, feel free to email or IM me.
I know this church is true and I love it with all my heart. I am a convert as of last year and I've seen such a HUGE difference in my life. I have been blessed with so much.
I'm excited to hear you're looking into it. I suggest getting together with the missionaries in your area, have them hook you up with a Book of Mormon so you can start studying it, they could answer any questions you have as well.
If you want to know anything else, feel free to email or IM me.
Have a great day!
Sarah

If you take careful notice regarding the mormon answers, note they pretty much say all the same thing: They're happy, normal, moral and everything else you'd expect from a nice brochure, and there's not a thing wrong with that.

But the underlying message is absolute conformity, magical thinking and the parroting back of dogma. The church is highly organized to the point where you are told precisely what to say and think. There is no discussion, except here on the internet.

Of course, medieval Catholicism was pretty much the same way, except the "Inquisition" has been replaced by the "Court of Love".

If you can learn more about the church before someone sics the missionaries on you, you'll have a better chance of surviving.

Check out exmormon.org, it is full of a lot of things the Mormon church would prefer you did not know about them, all backed up with texts. Whilst they say they are made by people with a hatred of the Mormon Church you will find that not only is it backed up with doctrines and texts from Mormon church prophets, but it is also a fact that the Mormon church calls the christian churches corrupt and the whore of babylon therefore I cant think of anything more hateful than that.

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints(LDS/Mormon are nicknames).

The corner stone of our church is Jesus Christ. The two most basic principles of our church is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and repentance through him. I'd say the next biggest thing we focus on is raising righteous families, because we believe that families can be forever(when thought about in the eternal sense families are much more important) and that's just the way the Lord intends it to be. I love my family more than anything else on earth.

We believe the Bible is the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly. We believe that the Lord visited his other sheep (see John 10:16) in the Americas. There is a record of this visitation and of the people who lived there. It is called the Book of Mormon (hence our nickname Mormon).

It is full of the teachings of Prophets called of God, just like the ones in the Bible. Just like the New Testament it accasionally quotes the Old Testament. The Nephites and Lamenites are the people of whom the record speaks.

I know Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. I have felt His love and seen His promises. I have felt the witness of the Holy Spirit touch me and speak to my heart, telling me Christ isn't some fairy tale. By this same power I know Jesus visited his other sheep just as he promised. I know with all my heart and soul that the Book of Mormon is the scripture of God. It brings many plain and precious truths back after centuries of false interpretations of the Bible.

The Priesthood power has been restored to the earth and a Prophet stands at the head of the church today to lead and guide us.

Read James 1:5-6 and ask your Father in Heaven if these things are true. You can know for yourself, you don't need to take anyones word for it.

I submit these to you in the utmost sincerity and humility. I am only able to testify of the through the mercy of Jesus Christ.

Im LDS and I love my life. We are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and we believe Jesus is our savior and died for our sins so that we can return to him some day. We believe the bible and the Book of Mormon to be true and called of God.

Many will critisize us because of our "strict" rules such as no driking alcohol, no smoking, no sex before marriage, no tattoos, no revealing clothing, no gambling, and stuff like that. The reasons: to protect us and keep us clean and pure like Christ himself. After all, you'd never see Christ doing things like that, right?

So that's some of it, but not all of it. All I know is this: Im's 17 years old and am still happy without some of the things teenagers do today. I get to date and have a good time, but still feel close to my Heavenly Father while doing that. I don't know where I would be in my life without the Church.
IM HAPPY : )

I live a good life being a member of the LDS Church. While my wife, a Methodist, doesn't believe as I do, she does support me in my callings and assignments.

I am the First Counselor in the Elders' Quorum where we worship and I teach frequently in the classroom and in the home assignments. Sundays are my busiest of days, but I also sing in the choir and attend other meetings as required. I go to the Baton Rouge Temple whenever possible and try to live a life of example to others.

During my inactive years I enjoyed my beer and coffee, but now that I'm full-blown active again I don't miss it. I enjoy reading and pondering the scriptures--including the Bible--and help out on this forum. Questions as yours are refreshing in lieu of those that love to ride roughshod on the LDS beliefs.

Mormons try to live as Christ would want them to live, just as He would want any Christian to live.

Aside from the religious part, I'm simply another neighbor that enjoys playing and teaching the guitar during my retirement years. I don't have horns on my head as some folk would think.

Many people think that we have a false religion, that it has changed many times, that even the original text of the Book of Mormon has changed.. etc...

An example of one person that left the Church and then "bad mouthed" it falsely (later recanted but nobody wants to hear about that).. anyway.. he quit because a letter to him from the Prophet had his name mispelled and he thought that a true Prophet would know how to spell his name.. he didn't know that many of the things that Joseph Smith wrote were dictated to others who in turn made mistakes or could not keep up properly and thus corrections had to be made.. (of course these changes are picked appart quite often)...

What we believe.. We believe that we are all Spirit Children of God, the Heavenly Father and that before the Earth was formed we lived in Heaven with Him...

We believe that Jesus Christ is God's ONLY begotten Son in the Flesh here upon Earth...

We believe that Jesus was given God's power to Physically create the world and all that is on it...

We believe that Jesus is "God" of the Old Testament, speaking to the Prophets by the direction and authorization of Heavenly Father...

We believe that Jesus' will is the same as Heavenly Father's will and also the will of the Holy Ghost.. so they are all of one will.. that will is the Will of the Father...

We believe that God the Father and Jesus Christ have Physical bodies but the Holy Ghost does not.. and they are three distinct beings.. but still of one Will...

We believe that Joseph Smith prayed to God for help and was made a Prophet for the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ upon the Earth along with the Priesthood which was lost when the Apostles were all killed...

We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is led by Jesus Christ as God Wills, that He is Alive today...

We believe many more things and you can find out more at http://www.lds.org where you can read nearly any of our Scriptures or Documents, beliefs, etc...

My family lives in Texas, I have a BS Mathematics degree and am a certified Secondary Teacher.. I used to substitute until last fall when I took a better paying job...

We attend Church nearly every Sunday (I work in electronics and sometimes my work takes me out of State for weeks at a time)...

I am a High Priest and I just ordained my Son in the Church as a Deacon...

Note about what we believe about the Priesthood.. It is intended for EVERY man to help his family, not just for leaders to help the congregation...

We believe in building Temples and doing work for the dead there.. also, My Bride and I were Married in the Salt Lake Temple.. and our marriage (nor our family) will not end at death.

Awesome question. If you seek information on something, I suggest two things. You will get a lot of detractors telling you to listen to their sad story. That is fine. I do not suggest ignoring them but to go ahead and listen. But as you do that, you should also listen to proponents or members tell their story too.

If you want to learn about Chevrolet cars, you would not go to Ford to get your answers. You will only hear about Ford's point of view. Likewise, if you want to learn about Ford's you will get a biased view from the Chevrolet people.

Likewise, if you want to find out about the Mormons, go talk to the Mormons. to be fair and equal, you need to hear the Mormon's side of it too.

Try this site: www.mormon.org.

Also, ask to talk with the Mormon missionaries. They will share with you an awesome message of happiness and truth.
