I am in a debate with a freind over this.
He believes that kids learn morals through religion learned in school, and he has proof.
I believe that Morals are learned throughout life and do not need to be taught to one through religion.

Whats your thought on how morals should be taught?

Morals can be taught by philosophy. All the great philosophers of ancient Greece were Atheists, so there's no religious connotations involved. You don't need the threat of Punishment or the conformity to Authority that 'Religion' promotes to have moral behavior. You can talk about the Social Contract of primate social adaptation, our needs as social beings, and I wish Karma. But that's a 'religious' construct. I think morality can be taught without religion.

Moral have nothing to do with religion. You CAN learn morals from religion, but you can also learn morals from doing what is right, and religion has no claim on being right.

I found this book in the library, Religion For Dummies (I'm not kidding; it does exist). I was surprised to find that most religious rules of behavior are relatively similar. It seems to me that there are basic human rules, and religion is simply a way to explain those rules. I think it's possible to teach those morals by pointing out that they are cross cultural rules.

Because morals have absolutely nothing to do with religion. Morals are essential to our evolutionary survival. It's in our best interest as a species to do the right thing.

Morals do not come from religion; a good religion should encompass morals. I would not want to follow a God with no morals. But morals do not come from religion; you should have morals from respect from your fellow man, not obedince to a religion.

Very little to do with religion. Unless you mean the small minded restrictions arbitrarily imposed by some ancient belief systems.
