The motor would not fit in front without pushing back the firewall. To keep legroom they turned the motor on its side and put in under the car. Also with the 4wd version the motor is centered.

Keep in mind that the original Previa was based on a van that Toyota had produced for the international markets. In the other areas of the world, shorter, taller, narrower designs were more usable. With that being the case, the mid-engine, mounted under the drivers seat, allowed the front end to be shorter and allowed for smaller packaging of the vehicle. It had the added benefit of better balance of the overall package.
