in other words what does it mean in like saying "in burning fossil fuels which release excessive amounts

help plz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Release just means to give off or expel.

A release means that a chemical or man made product such as carbon dioxide from cars or trucks is released into the atmosphere that is above the allowable quantity that the state and the US EPA allows. Or a release is a quantity of a liquid ie: spilled drum that has spilled into a sewer and now threatens the environment that the liquid comes in contact with.

"To release excessive amounts" is bit of an over statement. Anyway it means to convert a solid/liquid into a gas and "release" it to the atmosphere.

It's kind of shorthand. If you think of, say, carbon dioxide being trapped and locked up in long-ago plants that turned into coal and oil, then when you burn that coal or oil, you can think of the carbon dioxide being released from "captivity"...
