It is mandatory that naturalizing citizens demonstrate fluency in written and spoken English. Where there's no requirement is for native born citizens.
So we have plenty of native-born citizens who are children of illegal immigrants (invited here by corporations) who never hear any English at home and speak a hodgepodge of 20 or 30 languages, but can't read or write in anything.
Just thinking about it is crazy-making . . . . .

The previous respondent (Nora) is correct. Naturalized U.S. citizens must speak English in order to receive citizenship. However, landed immigrants don't need to. Neither is there a requirement for U.S.-born citizens, although if they go through the American school system I would hope that they emerge speaking some English :)

well my sons school teaches kids spanish, its a good school but why we do live in North America & the primary language is English. in my son's shool he has to share his 2nd grade class wiht 1st graders because that's all there is, the rest of the classrooms are thought in spanish only!
i speak spanish and my kids speak spanish at home only, so i think it's ridiculous.
You are right! it should be mandatory!
but there are those who want the laws to make it mandatory to have everyone speak english only,wheter at home or on public. now that is absurd.

It comes down to enforcement. It's impossible to madate because nobody has an efficient method of enacting it.

Its the supreme screwing things up again. As usual. They pass alot of bs but something as simple as that they won't. It infringes on the rights. I don't see how, but these mental midgets do.

Because we have let more and more losers into the cuntry, so that liberals have more votes. Mexicans will never have to lean English... they will run the cuntry in a few years...which sucks.
