thank you so much for your sympathy, its a very difficult thing to explain to someone if they dont suffer with it.
i have my son with me in the house but hes only 3 so it makes no difference to me :)
i do sometimes sleep with the radio on low and i have noticed that thinking random things does help alot!
i am thinking about going to see my doctor but i dont want him to think im beng ridiculous

Oh, my goodness! Weird!

I had this for about...7 years. I couldn't go to sleep unless someone else was awake in the room next to me, or unless if someone else was in the same bed with me, even if it was just another dude spending the night (it was a big bed, so shut up...).

I didn't know it was a phobia, but...I reckon I just...got over it. But there's no reason for you to have to wait seven years. My father used to yell at me and tell me to shut up, because he just didn't get it.

There's a real TERROR about falling asleep or even just going to bed that they don't understand. It's not thieves or monsters, it's not fear of dying in one's sleep...it's just...a fear.

I know how you feel. Just remember. You've slept EVERY night all your life. (Except for all-nighters...) Other people are awake SOMEWHERE in your neighborhood. You're only taking a nap for about 6 or 7 hours...then it's back to the grind.

We take a nap when the sun goes down, usually. It's just the time that we generally get a few winks. No big deal. If you don't want to sleep, then don't. Stay up. Read or exercise...get yourself SO TIRED that you can't think about sleep.

Or...look forward to meeting the strange characters in dreamland. Regis Philbin and Betty Boop once fought each other...it was hilarious.

But what finally helped me...I just used to daydream about things I couldn't wait for...college, life, a marriage...or even things that would never happen; I would swoop into a huge arena and fight off some thugs who were messing with the most beautful girl in the world. No one but God can read your mind...think immature and crazy thoughts all you want!

Those were some of the things that helped me over it. I still remember the fear. Even the nausea when it got really bad. But...just catching a couple hours until it gets bright again...just...drifting off...

Doesn't sound stupid at all. If you live alone, it certainly would be an issue - a lot of people will get a couple of room mates so they're never alone at night.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy may help with this. If not, it might be a good place to start to see where you can find help.

You might also check into NLP or Emotional Freedom Technique.

I know of people who have such fears. Here are some of their remedies.
Sleep in a recliner-chair rather than a bed.
Sleep with the TV on low.
Turn-on a fan in your room - it's called "white noise"
Get a room mate.
Have a pet - cat or dog sleep by your bed.
