I've recently (within the past six months or so) begun my spiritual search and think that I might be gearing towards recommitting myself to the Christian faith. Before I do so, I have a few conflicts and questions I need to resolve. What books, besides the Bible, would you recommend? I loved Mere Christianity and am in the middle of The Case for Christ right now. Thanks for your input.

* C. S. Lewis's "The Four Loves" and "The Meaning of Pain" (you're already a Lewis' fan).
* Miguel de Unamuno's "On The Tragic Sense of Life" (a great Catholic thinker from Spain, turn of the 20th century. Just great!).
* Any and all of Henri Nouwen's books. I'd highlight "The Wounded Healer" and "The Return of the Prodigal Son."

you took the words right out of my mouth. I'm not a fan of Christian populist Max Lucado, and Chuck Swindoll is a better communicator from the pulpit than from a book. Joel Osteen, well that's a whole 'nother subject there. F. F. Bruce and Frederick Buechner are notable scholars. I've read some of Bruce's works, but not Buechner, but I sure do hear Buechner quoted a lot. Hope this helps.

If you enjoy or have ever wondered about the universe that God created, you have got to read "The Case for a Creator" after you finish the one you're reading now...

I just finished it and it was awesome!

There's also a series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins that is really interesting. It's called the "Left Behind" series, it's a fictional drama series based on the Bible.

Good reading!

You have chosen one of the best, The Case for Christ. Another beautiful book is by Max Lucado, He Chose the Nails. It's about why Jesus went to the cross for us.

Another beautiful book, it's an allegory, "Hind's Feet in High Places". I know you asked for books other than the bible....but the bible is the source of all you seek about God.

May God bless and guide you in your seeking.

A book that I would never hesitate to say is the best book besides the word of God, is the Great Controversy. Words could never express how wonderful this book is and I wish I could place one in every christian home, better yet, every home in the world. Words could not do justice to what this book means to me, and what I truly believe means to the world.

You have the most awesome resource available to anyone ready to answer any serious questions you might have. She is the Spirit of truth. Not only does She know everything there is to know about GOD, She knows more about you than anybody else even yourself. Give Her a chance before you settle on other people's opinions. If She can't tell you what you need to know then there is no hope.

I absolutely love Max Lucado and have read several of his books. I lost my seven year old son last summer after a lengthy battle with a rare disease and his books have helped me remain sane as well as gain some insight. He also adds humor and real life experiences in his writing. Good luck to you and God Bless.

1 Timothy 4

1The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
6If you point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. 7Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

9This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance 10(and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.

11Command and teach these things. 12Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

15Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
