What he meant was those who walk in the light do not sin but then he says in other verses that if we sin we have an advocate in heaven who justifies us. Is there a contradiction here? No. 1 John is a teaching on sin and sinfulness. Here is an interpretation of verses 8-10 which should clarify things for you.
8-10] Denial of the condition of sin is self-deception and even contradictory of divine revelation; there is also the continual possibility of sin's recurrence. Forgiveness and deliverance from sin through Christ are assured through acknowledgment of them and repentance.
Peace and every blessing!

No, the book of 1 John is saying that a true Christian doesn't live a lifestyle that is characterized by sin. No one can live a perfect sin free life but the Holy Spirit slowly sanctifies Christians as they get made a little more like Jesus each day and eventually the major blatant sins disappear from a Christians life and they only sin by accident unless they go through a phase of rebellion and then God disciplines them so that they repent.

Hi Nuff Said Sis,
What specific chapter and verse are you referring to?
Here's a scripture from 1 John related to sin.
1 John 1:8-10 - If we make the statement: "We have no sin," we are misleading ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous so as to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we make the statement: "We have not sinned," we are making him a liar, and his word is not in us.
So we do sin and we have the opportunity for forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
If you have any questions on a specific scripture feel free to e-mail me. I know there must be a particular verse that you are referencing. See my profile - to e-mail me!

The main point in 1st John is that everyone does sin, but we should try not to. It even says "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves" and John is talking directly to Christians. John was celebrating the fact that Christ can atone for our sins, not the absence of sin.

1 John 1:8 ( I thought you read this)
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
When this was written, people had been claiming that they had no sin. Jesus taught that those who owned up to their sin could find forgiveness, while those who were blind to their sin would be left mired in it.

Actually, the context of 1 John is to combat Gnostic heresy. They were claiming that there was no need of a Savior. They claimed to have no sin. St. John was clear..."If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves..."

Yes it is. And yes we all sin, but we must ask forgivness for those sins, because those sins can ruin our fellowship. Just like King David sinned even though he served God his fellowship wasnt the same till he asked for forgivness. King David wasn't the same cause he asked God to return unto me the Joy of thy salvation.

nope, it doesn't say that we don't sin. it says that if we confess our sins, they will be forgiven.
1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

i do that which i would not and that which i would not, that i do
the law makes aware that we are sinful and in need of repentance and since the wages of sin is death, we need salvation, since GOD made the law, and HE knew we could never be perfect on our own, does this make sin ok, no, GOD and sin cannot co-exist, so GOD sent HIS only Son, JESUS CHRIST to pay the wages of sin for us. does this mean since JESUS paid the price for us, we are free to sin...no, tho many believe this is so, it is not...JESUS said to be perfect even as our FATHER in Heaven is perfect...that isnt to say we are, but that we must strive to be and that we must abhor sin and wickedness even as GOD does. a true child of GOD avoids sin and wickedness at all costs and lives in obedience to the real living GOD rather than the self created image of God that man makes to suit his lifestyle. yes, a true child of GOD sins, but when they do, they feel rotten, terrible, unspeakable...and seek repentance as quickly as possible to cleanse them, for they know that what they have done is sinned against the GOD they love.
