I have a Maltese & a Shih-tzu (both nonshedding/hypo-allergenic). My Shih-tzu is the clown....very playful and my Maltese is a total lap dog...very sensitive. I love them both dearly.
Just remember nonshedding dogs need to be groomed on a regular basis because their hair grows like human hair. This gets quite spendy (about $40 every 6 weeks per dog).

There no dogs that are 100% hypoallergenic. A very sensitive person will be allergic to all dogs. Allergies are caused by dander from the skin, not the dog's coat. Still, dogs that don't shed have less dander and will trigger fewer allergies in sensitive people. Small breeds considered less allergenic are poodles, bichon frises and shih tzus.

No dog is hypo-allergenic. Some people are allergic to the saliva. I'd talk to breeders, perhaps at a dog show. Choosing between allergy shots, allergy medicine, itchy skin and a dog isn't fun. Especially if you or your child's allergies are severe. Stay away from the designer breeds.

My grandmother was on oxygen and couldn't be around shedding dogs. We always had poodles and they never bothered her once. So I would feel safe to say that a poodle would be a great choice. They have different sizes; teacup poodle, toy poodle, miniature poodle, standard poodle...

You will need to look beyond the normal pets and go for something more exotic. If you are allergic to dogs and cats you might want to get a lizard or snake.Ask at your local pet store if they have pets for people with allergies.

Poodles a seem to be the best for people with allergies but just remember they are very high maintenance when it comes to grooming.

I have both a maltese and a yorkie and they are both good for allergy sufferers and pretty small, my dad has very bad allergies, which made it hard when looking for a dog, but both dogs have been fine for my dad and he hasn't had any problems.
