MSG is a preservative. I'm not aware of any birth defects that have been caused by it. Many people are sensitive to it (myself included). For me, it causes migraines.

It's commonly used in Asian foods. It's also used in salad bars and such.

Many such places no longer use it because people are allergic to it.

As for harmful effects, I don't know. I suppose you could contact the FDA for more information.

MSG, monosodium glutamate, is an additive that brings out the flavor in food. It definitely adds sodium to your food, just like the sodium in salt, so it could affect one's blood pressure. It is supposed to cause some brain damage, but that has not been proven. The Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipinos use it a lot, and most of them are normal!

MSG is a flavor enhancer. It's like salt on steroids. I don't know about the health effects. I think it's considered unhealthy, though. (But what foods are healthy these days?)

They put MSG on a few chips and cracker products (like Doritos).

I think that most people don't suffer from the ill effects of MSG actually. And, MSG is used in more foods than people realize! For those of us that do have a sensitivity, its nice to know that we can request that it be left out!

It makes me extremely thirsty a few hrs. after consuming anything laced with it. Some people get bad headaches. I grew up consuming MSG also. But since it's so high in sodium, I try my best to avoid eating any food containing it.

I'm korean my mother uses msg's for quite allot of things, but tries avoiding it cuz of allot of negative things it can do to you... building an immunity with it is most unlikely.

MSGs basically are food preservatives such as for can foods buffets and fast foods and it also adds more flavor. lets just say the negative effects of it are such as oil, like clogging blood pores and getting fat and raising ur blood levels
