You need to be running 8 minute miles and 50 is a realistic goal. Work on your speed work to learn the pace it takes to do it. Go to a track and run laps (either 440s or 400 meters, it doesn't matter) in 2 minutes. Get that feel for that pace and increase it - run segments of the 10 K - run a 5 k in 24-5 minutes.

But interspace this with runs of 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to build the base that will carry through the 10K.

You can do it - I was in the same situation when I was in my early 40's and finally got so I could do 10 k around 48 minutes - I was so pleased!

But of course, take it easy, don't hurt yourself doing this and good luck!

Try to run miles in less than 7:30.

Uh, well i'd run faster and if you can't don't sweat it not everybody is ment for running.
