I think it stems from not knowing their own viewpoint very well and fearing that it may be threatened by the existance of a differing viewpoint.
BTW, nearly all belief systems have some adherents who tend to think this way (Christian, athiest, muslim, wiccan, etc), so there's no need to single anyone out. I like to think that these are the 'vocal minority' (meaning you hear from them all the time but they are only a small percentage) and most people are better than that (or value individual freedom of thought more highly)

I don't. The way I look at it, Religion (which is what I assume you're talking about, based on the category) is a personal matter that should not be anyone else's business, save (perhaps) close family members.
I think people can be any religion they want to be as long as they don't try to hurt other people--physically or emotionally--with it.

When it comes to the thoughts of any one person my philosophy has always been very simple.
It may be that I don't agree with your line of thought but I freely admit you have the right to think that way.
This is especially true for me as a Preacher, writer and Evangelist.
Naturally I have my thoughts and convictions and yes they may differ from yours but that doesn't make you wrong, just of a different opinion.
All I have ever asked for is the same courtesy.

There are lots of groups and people that can fit into that category!
Some are ignorant, some are misguided, some are arrogant, some are simply disinterested and many are just plain closed minded.
But to each his own :0)

it's a generational thing. The traditions of what is "right" and what is "wrong" are passed on to the next generation and they carry the torch for the next generations that follow them. It's rather sick to see most people brainwash their own childern to believe what they believe. Almost as bad as David Koresh...

Yeah, I find it ironic that some people (not naming names, you know who you are) will tell us all how they are "free thinkers" while at the same time calling anyone who doesn't agree with their "free thinking" stupid, low class, insecure, or brain washed.
Silly, isn't it?

I would guess it's because they imagine that their way is the only right way. They have a very black/white way of looking at the world.
