Medically speaking PRN is Latin for "Pro re Nata" meaning ...as the situation requires or is needed. As one person put it...if you have pain pills but are not in pain then you don't need to taker the pill.But if you are in pain then take the pill as directed.

PRN is code in the medical industry meaning "administer [this drug] as needed." It is most likely from a Latin abbreviation, but I don't know for sure.

For example, pain medicine - if you're not in pain, you don't need it, but a course of pennicilin must be completed to the end because even if you're feeling better, the disease can still be in your body, but on the run.
