My husband was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and before then had taken a wide variety of antidepressants. The antidepressants did not make him impotent, but did make it impossible for him to orgasm. I've been on another one antidepressant and had the same problem, so, in our experience with 6+ antidepressants, all of them had that negative side effect (although he cared, whereas the antidepressant made me not care I couldn't get off).
People with bipolar disorder don't always need antidepressants though, sometimes it's even bad to give them an antidepressant because it increases the risk of mania. Often bipolar people only need a mood stabilizer. My husband was on Depakote (and no antidepressant) for months and was not impotent and didn't have any trouble reaching orgasm either.
So, if it's impotence, try switching medications and/or Viagra or such. If it's a 'mere' failure to orgasm, make sure whether he needs to be on an antidepressant, or whether a mood stabilizer alone would be good enough, such as Depakote or lithium. Have him talk this through with his psychiatrist, obviously. Btw, Depakote is known to reduce male fertility while taking the drug, so that might be a problem in the future, but I got pregnant while my husband was on it anyway, it just took a long time.

Some medications have this side affect more than others, maybe he could talk to his Doctor & switch to medications that wont do this as much? I think one is Wellbutrin? There are lots of different ones, lots of new ones too. He needs to talk to his Doctor! Good Luck!!! I'm bipolar also, in te past some of my meds caused problems too. I've found meds now that don't cause as much problems.

I'm on anti-depressants, which are also used to treat bi-polar problems. i am in a serious 7 year relationship and it is difficult to orgasm on these types of medications. i find it easiest to make love when my medications are wearing off before the next dose, though it does take time and persistence with your partner, and can also be frustrating. i hope this helps!

He'll need to discuss this with his Dr., but I'm sure Viagra or something similar can help him.
