Upside : He brought joy to countless fans around the world through his music, and created a sense of community among Deadheads that has begun to evaporate over time.

Downside : He was a known drug addict, and while not listed as an official cause on his death certificate, drugs most likely expedited his demise.

I have no idea what his religious affiliation was, but he struck me as the type who *would* have believed in a god.

Jayelle posted a question earlier tonight that inspired this question.

Jerry Garcia was even more talented as a songwriter than as a guitarist, and his singing was also underrated. He lived to the age of 53 - 53 years of a man's life that brought a lot to this world. It would have been a far worse place without him.

The Grateful Dead were as American as anything that ever existed, right up there with baseball.

"Friend of the Devil" is a rare gem - a simple song, wonderfully written. If you only know the version from "American Beauty", you owe it to yourself to listen to one of the hundreds of live versions out there. They played it as a bluegrass tune, but they also played it as a slow English ballad.

Before I knew the Dead, I assumed they were a loud, raucous, heavy-metal kind of thing. That is absolutely not the case. They were a very song-oriented group, with lots of vocal harmonies, a great mix of rock and jazz and bluegrass and country and blues, _very_ respectful of tradition (Jerry especially).

Honestly....it takes you a little more than just believing in God. The bible says you need to be born again to enter heaven. In otherwords, becoming a Christian. Is Jerry in heaven? If he was a Christian-yes.

I doubt that Jerry went to Heaven because as far as I know he had never trusted in Jesus as his Savior and so when He appears before God he will have to pay his own sin debt instead of accepting God's payment that Jesus offers to all who will believe on Him.

I don't know if Jerry was a Christian or not but I do know that at least one of the G.D. songs sure didn't sound Christian to me.

Friend of the Devil

I lit out from reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds
Didnt get to sleep last night till the morning came around.

Set out runnin but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills
I spent the night in utah in a cave up in the hills.

Set out runnin but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there
He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air.

Set out runnin but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night,
The first ones named sweet anne marie, and shes my hearts delight.
The second one is prison, babe, the sheriffs on my trail,
And if he catches up with me, Ill spend my life in jail.

Got a wife in chino, babe, and one in cherokee
The first one says shes got my child, but it dont look like me.

Set out runnin but I take my time,
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.
