They want to confirm important facts about you --
Social vs Greencard /Visa -- or illegal alien. -- all have different meanings to companys hiring.

Credit Report -- it's not illegal to ensure employees are not credit risks...and that they can manage their finances. The most important fact here is -- they may need to Bond you--have an insurance policy opened up on you. For their insurance and security purposes. Often companies have expensive equipment and need to have insurance coverage...they insure employees and that helps cover / offset the cost of the store.

Also, they tend not to hire people with bad credit reports. -- it can be a sign of the type of person they're hiring.

It is the new way of verifying a person looking for a job. If you have a low credit score, you are less likely to get a job because the employer knows that statistically, persons who can't manage their money or borrow too much and don't make timely payment are more likely to steal to help pay their bills. Enough said.
