So could a sealent be used on a small cavity, or are fillings the only way to fix them?

WHO,

BASICALLY THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE WITH MODERN COMPOSITE MATERIALS BETWEEN A SEALANT AND A FILLING.
IN A SEALANT, A FLOWABLE COMPOSITE IS PLACED ON THE BITING SURFACES OF THE TOOTH. THIS COVERS THE SMALL CREVICES ON THE TOOTH WHERE CAVITIES BEGIN. THERE IS NO DRILLING INTO THE TOOTH TO REMOVE DECAY.

WITH A FILLING A DRILL IS USED TO REMOVE DECAY FROM THE TOOTH AND A FILLING IS PLACED WITHIN. HERE THE DECAY HAS TAKEN HOLD AND MUST BE REMOVED. A SEALANT MAY HAVE PREVENTED THIS.

A sealant is placed on the molars to preven decay. A dental assistant can do sealants. A filling is is placed where there is decay already and the decay was removed by the dentist. The dr removes the decay and he/she places a filling and in some states a dental assistant with special training can place the filling.

A filling requires removal of tooth structure. A sealant does not.

Sealants are placed on virgin molars to fill in grooves in the biting surface that are smaller than a toothbrush bristle. It keeps bacteria from staying in the grooves and creating decay.

Once decay starts, the decay must be removed completely, and then a filling is placed.

A sealant covers and area that is more discolored and only slight cavities.Fillings are for more extreme case that require getting the tooth sanded down so that the filling will stick.

A filling fills a cavity, a sealant protects your molars and hopefully prevents cavities
