I have noticed several of my friends have something black on their bottom teeth. I would think that it is painful, but they still seem to consume candy? I am thinking it is a form of decay or something, but I am not too sure. I don't think it is related to hygiene because I know they take care of their teeth, but I can't help but notice it. What is it?

You're right, it's decay. Try to encourage them to see the dentist, tooth decay can have serious affects on their health if it becomes infected.

Black Stuff On Teeth

If it's in between the teeth, sounds like tartar, tobacco stains. Has to be removed by a dentist. My grandma has periodontal disease and her's are black from not being able to brush between the pockets. The plaque has hardened. She needs tri-monthly cleanings. Reg brushes brush the top of the teeth but it's hard to brush in between so it's important to keep up with cleanings. And floss! And yes, it is a form of decay. If the black is closer to the gumline, it can be the black glue from poorly fitted caps/crowns.

Decay, Stains, Fillings..some people who have had tooth pain for years and years become oblivious to the pain because they live with it everyday. Say something to those people if it bothers you so much

It may be a crown that had cheap filler. Many insurance companies choose to use this instead of a porcelain crown to save money but it can lead to black lines along the gum lines over time.

IF YOUR FRIENDS SMOKE, THEN IT'S TOBACCO STAINS. OTHERWISE, IT'S DEPOSITSOF TARTAR THAT CAN'T BE REMOVED BY BRUSHING BUT ONLY DENTIST.
