Why did Jesus suffer and die the way he did? That is a very important question. It was because he supported his Father’s side in the issue of universal sovereignty, or rulership, that was raised in the Garden of Eden w/ Adam, Eve, Satan and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Bad. He proved God to be true and Satan a liar. And he did that by letting his earthly life be controlled by God, even though it resulted in a martyr’s death.—2 Corinthians 5:14, 15. That death was an expression of God’s love through Christ. (1 John 4:10) As a result of it, benefits were made available to all mankind. (Romans 5:8; 6:23) But how many are willing to accept those benefits? How many are willing to imitate Christ and sacrifice their own desires in submission to God’s will?—Hebrews 13:15, 17.

Jesus who is righteous died the death of the unrighteous, ungodly sinners. This He did to save sinners like me and like you. There is no one righteous, not even one apart from Him because He is God incarnate and since incarnate He is true man as well as true God.
There is no more horrible a death than the death of a truly, yes truly righteous man. This can be mocked but Jesus truly turned the other cheek. He went the extra mile; for when they compelled him to walk the way of the cross He did not stop there but went came forth from the tomb alive forever more and offered Himself to the Father for the propitiation (Covering) of our sin.

"Gruesome" is not what Jesus's death was about. The suffering of Jesus's death has nothing to do with the intensity of physical pain. Of course being crucified is painful, but there are plenty of people down through human history who have suffered great physical pain in their dying. (If you want gruesome, consider the phrase "hanged, drawn, and quartered".)
There is a pain that dwells in the spirit, not in the nerves. This pain is connected with love. For instance, we feel pain at the Virginia Tech massacre, not because we were among those who suffered physically, but because we care about our brothers and sisters, and we are pained at their loss. This is why a parent suffers intense pain to see his child suffer, because he cares about that child. If we were callous and heartless, we would be spared this sort of pain, because we could not feel it.
Jesus suffered most, not because what was done to him was worst, but because he loved the most. He was wounded so deeply because he loved so deeply. Wouldn't the pain of being attacked and violently hurt by someone you loved cause you more suffering than being attacked by a total stranger?
It is because he loves us so much that God is so pained by the evil we humans do. Jesus on his cross loved us all, deeply and intensely, and that was the cause of his suffering.

Even though the Bible says he was beaten like no other one could always argue that point. Whatever. Consider this:
The sins of the entire world - past, present and future - were put upon Him.
He bore them alone and, for the first time, His Father turned from Him.
We cannot even conceive what that is like.
If that makes no sense to you I pray someday it will.
Have a fine one.

Well, you've got to remember that this story has been told to generations of children and to a child, this is a very horrific image. The scars this image leave remain for the entire life of the child unless they can be enlightened with Atheism.

Don't forget that JC wasn't the only one Crucified. I think those that were drawn and quartered got the worst of it.

It was the sin and guilt of man that was put upon Christ. He bore the full, eternal, infinite wrath of God. The physical crucifixion was only a part of this wrath.
