My niece is 4ft 1 inch tall and weighs 4st 9lb. My brother is putting her on a diet but to me she is fine. I can't find any books to compare her height to her weight. What do you think is it too much? She is 7 years old.

I REALLY wouldn't put a seven year old child on a reduced calorie diet. At that age the metabolism is all over the place, at some times growing physically and at others learning at a fast pace etc etc. You don't want to second guess this extremely complex system.

That said, there is no harm in trying to gradually introduce any child to healthy eating habits - cut down on the high fat, high sugar processed junk food and eat lots more fresh fruit and vegetables and lean protein sources such as lean meat and white fish.

Please don't say she doesn't like fruit or veg cos it's just a matter of finding a few fruits and/or vegetables she does like there are millions of species out there.

its very hard to find charts for children, I've looked, but at 7 yrs old she doesn't need to be told she's on a 'diet' as that will result in her feeling deprived, but your brother could easily try planning healthier meals and snacks for all the family and it will do them all good, also adding exercise into the routine like walking to school, or swimming, cycle rides all stuff that can make the little girl feel part of the family with all of them doing it. Walking a dog,

According to BMI it is overweight, but a child should never be put on a diet unless under the supervision of a doctor.

I think it would be more sensible just to encourage healthy eating and regular exercise.

If she doesn't look over weight theres no need for a diet at such a young age maybe just get her into a sporting activity and just cup ot a bit of the rubbish (sweets, chocolate, crisps) etc from her diet

I honestly dont think that is overweight. If he is concerned about her weight, maybe try to set a good example for her. Eat healthy and exercise.

i would let her be, kids grow upwards and outwards all the time, if she starts looking podgy in her late teens then i will put her on a diet, but not while she is growing, she could be as thin as a rake in a few years, but i wouldn't encourage dieting now as it could lead to constant dieting in years to come.
